Maattrraan – Preview and SWOT Analysis

by Raven

Maattrraan is one of the most anticipated films of this year and is all set for release on this Friday (12th October).  The movie brings back the successful combo of Director K V Anand and Suriya after their smash hit Ayan in 2009. There is a lot of buzz around this movie as Suriya plays the role of conjoined twins in the movie. The music for the film is scored by Suriya’s favourite music director Harris Jayaraj.  Cinematography is handled by Soundar Rajan and editing is done by Anthony. Kajal Agarwal plays Suriya’s love interest and Sachin Khadekar plays an important role in the film.

Strengths

  • Suriya has been brilliant when it comes to choosing the films and roles. The critics and the general public are very curious to watch his conjoined twins act.

  • Suriya has expanded his market into neutral and family fan base and he attracts people of all age groups. This usually reflects in the box-office longevity of his movies.

  • K V Anand is known for directing gripping entertainers. He knows very well to shape his films in a way so that everyone can enjoy it.

Weaknesses

  • Harris Jayaraj’s songs have received mixed opinions. Critics have panned the album saying most of the songs appear similar to his older compositions. These songs when watched with picturization is expected to catch-on.

Opportunities

  • Maattrraan gets a solo release and a direct Tamil film (Thaandavam) was released two weeks ago. English Vinglish, which released last week, is going strong but it has occupied only minimal number of screens. Next weeks, Pizza is slated for release, but it may not have the star power to dethrone Maattrraan.

  • As we had reported in our article Maattrraan all areas sold out for record price, this is the biggest ever opening for a Suriya’s film. This goes to show that Suriya is growing rapidly in the south industry. If the movie manages to garner good collections, it would put Suriya into the next big league.

Threats

  • Karnataka Cauvery issue has created some uncertainties whether Maattrraan will release in Bangalore, Mysore and other regions in Karnataka. Suriya has a strong market and this is expected to impact 5% of overall business, valued roughly at Rs.4 Crores.

Final Words

Maattrraan could be a commercial extravaganza if Suriya and K.V.Anand are at their usual best. Suriya is known for doing experimental roles and pulling them off in style. Let us hope Maattrraan team's hard work pays off!
