Will 24 and Kabali release in 60+ Chengalpet Theatres?

With Theri becoming a runaway hit, Kalaipuli Thaanu is having the last laugh. The Chennai city theatres saw increase in occupancy with fans from Chengalpet area thronging to city theatres. After a tug of war between Theri producer and Chengalpet area exhibitors on Minimum Guarantee (MG) terms, about 60 screens in Chengalpet area (including the popular ones such as Vettri, Rakki and Kasi) did not screen Theri. Producers council under the direction of Thaanu and Siva are threatening to sideline these 60 theatres for Kabali. Producer Gnanavel Raja announced his upcoming films 24 and Singam 3, both starring Suriya, may not be screened in these theatres.

The theatre exhibitors in Chengalpet area came under a lot of pressure from the disappointed Vijay's fans. Theatre owners came out explaining their stance on why such a difficult decision was taken. As per the theatre owners, MG is not common in this territory. The commercial terms are usually based on revenue share varying from 50:50 to max 70:30 in favor of producers/distributors. Theatre owners were willing to sign along the lines of Thuppakki and Kaththi. However, Producers quoted twice the amount as MG for Theri. Chengalpet theatre exhibitors firmly believed that such high investment will not be recoverable even if the movie turned out to Vijay's biggest BO ever.

Hope producers/distributors and theater exhibitors reach a resolution for the benefit of fans prior to the release.
