Confused storytelling shatters this soulful drama
Gandhi Kannadi seems confused on what it wants to be and say. The film is also mounted on Bala, who rose to fame with the comedy show Kalakka Povathu Yaaru. In fact, the film is a shadow promotion for him as he is also known for his altruism and philanthropy. What ultimately shatters is the film's inability to complete Gandhi and Kathir's arcs as they could have learnt from each other on what constitutes love's longevity in a relationship. That is the film that I would voluntarily remove my glasses for and cry.(more)

A tender idea stretched too thin
To its credit, the film is not a cringe reel. It is broadly watchable, with a few clean stretches that let the premise breathe. Bala is grounded with a believable tiredness, and that steadiness gives the film a floor. Balaji Sakthivel goes all in on Gandhis sentimental streak. You buy the man even when the decisions wobble. Archana brings decent chemistry to the couple. The craft is plain. That is not a crime, but the staging rarely finds a visual or narrative kick. Gandhi Kannadi keeps reaching for tears when what it really needs is sense and pace.(more)
