Idli Kadai serves nostalgia and sentimentality, but it isn't nearly enough

There are moments when the emotions work and the actors pitch in with performances that manage to elevate the simplistic way in which their characters are written. The way the romance between Murugan and Kayal (Nithya Menen) is developed also deserves mention, and feels like a new spin on the Kamal Haasan-Revathy episodes in Thevar Magan (another case of a young man with dreams of opening a chain of restaurants and engaged to a city-bred woman returning to his roots and ending up in love with a village belle). There's conviction in the filmmaking that makes us overlook several of the film's flaws. But what's hard to shake off is the feeling that given his talents, Dhanush should be more ambitious as a storyteller and not be content with just being a nostalgia merchant.(more)

Melodrama peaks in Dhanush's middling drama on homecoming

Idli Kadai, apart from its performances, gets the messaging right. It shows that one can take the high road, emphasises non-violence, and encourages dialogue to resolve disputes. Seasoned actors Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, and Geetha Kailasam bring honesty to their characters. Shalini Pandey's performance as Meera could have been more impactful. However, the scene where she handles her breakup by directly confronting Murugan deserves a special mention.(more)

An earnest and hopeful Dhanush steers this conventional melodrama in the right direction

Dhanush starrer is the kind of genuine, low stakes dramas that were regular in the 90's. The film's beauty lies in the small details, little crevices of goodness that emanate from its core despite the heavy handed treatment.(more)

Dhanush redeems a delectable comfort meal

Idli Kadai never promises to redefine the template. After NEEK, Dhanush seems to have dug deeper, perhaps wishing to taste the pleasures of a comfort meal, and this film is just that. It wishes to make you forget about fancy restaurant meals and remind you of a flavour you might have forgotten about, soothe you with its familiarity and leave you with a full heart.(more)

An earnest and hopeful Dhanush steers this conventional melodrama in the right direction

Idli Kadai being made in todays film ecosystem is a miracle of sorts as it is the kind of dramatically inert, vignette like cornball of a film that would not fair well in the age of loud, thumping blockbusters. This is a self contained film obsessed with nostalgia, roots and our cultural legacy. There are no sequels, spin offs or continuation of the arcs here. Just a good old yarn that walks the tight rope between preachy sentimentality and genuine guilt art borne out of bitter realizations.(more)
