Never Audacious nor Bare Minimum Engaging!

Suffers to stick firmly in focus with the story, the poorly incorporated mainstream elements spoil the first reel of the flow. But the issue isnt just that, there is absolutely no intensity in how the main story is presented, the Sci-Fi elements ruin it further.(more)

Ambitious multiverse concept meets mixed execution

Jiiva and Priya Bhavani Shankar have good chemistry and perform their roles well. It's a comeback of sorts for Jiiva and he has attempted something experimental. He convincingly portrays a character who struggles to control his anger. Priya Bhavani Shankar's performance is less explored, as she's mostly seen reacting to Jiivas experiences of his alternate selves. Vivek Prasanna has a minor role providing context to the events. Based on the 2013 film Coherence, Black presents some good ideas and aims to be a mind-bender.(more)

Delectable flourishes eclipse minor flaws in Jiiva and Priya Bhavani Shankar's mind-bending thriller

Despite reminding us of a slew of films and series on similar lines, Black does justice to the genre without taking its viewers for granted and spoon-feeding information. While the lack of a simplified explanation might be a common criticism, thats what makes Black along with titles like the Kannada film Blink which came out this year stand apart from other films that lose their essence by challenging the audiences intellect. A gripping screenplay, able performers and a strong technical crew, accentuate this well-written thriller; and Black manages to surpass its shortcomings and leaves us wishing we dont have to wait for another supermoon for such flicks.(more)

Jiiva, Priya Bhavanishankar shine in a gripping, intriguing melange of genres

The writing plays around with the rules of the films world, and it is a bit too conveniently wrapped up. The highs of the build up to the end isnt really felt to the same levels when the punchline is dropped. Yes, there is an epilogue after the credits start rolling, and it is an interesting setup, for sure. But the resolution to the film feels rather rushed. It is almost like buying a nice and thoughtful gift, getting a fantastic and wonderful wrapping paper, ironing out the edges, and slightly messing up the bow on top.(more)

Jiiva's sci-fi is an ambitious attempt with shortcomings

The film begins to hold your attention when they move into the house. With less than two hours of runtime, Black will make you feel invested with the scientific explanation that it offers. At times, the scientific explanation will feel confusing and leave you with more questions. That said, Black is an ambitious attempt and a decent addition to the sci-fi Tamil films. We travel with Vasanth and Aranya to different timelines and see many versions of them. Without making it feel repetitive, every time the couple goes to a new timeline, we get to learn something new about them. This makes you feel for Vasanth and Aranya and leaves you thinking about how they get out of the mess. Black would have been much more effective if it had simplified the scientific explanation than it intended to. (more)
