Retta Thala Review

Thin story yet there are a handful of plot-points with the potential for it to become a racy actioner. But the lethargic writing, drags the film from what it could have been.(more)

Even two Arun Vijays can't save this lifeless thriller

Even a decent stretch like Upendras backstory leaves you with a bad aftertaste from the presence of awkwardly AI-generated shots. As far as the action goes, the films sole highlight is a well-choreographed fistfight on the banks of a crocodile-infested river. To sum it all up, Retta Thala is all about Arun Vijay and music composer Sam CS struggling to save an insipid thriller from becoming anything worse.(more)

One man army without a rhythm to march to

Arun Vijay commits to both roles, staying lean and intense throughout. The script just doesn't give him space beyond standard action hero moves. Siddhi Idnani provides motivation for his choices before becoming furniture. Sam CS's score is acceptable, though it could have been dialed back. Production values offer some polish. Locations vary, visuals have slickness, runtime stays under two hours. What's missing is flow. Scenes don't connect, they just happen in sequence. The film never finds a rhythm where you can settle in and believe what's happening. You finish asking what the point was. Intrigue? Character work? None of it comes through. Just generic masala mechanics grinding along without spark. (more)

Stuns you with breathtaking levels of soullessness

Apparently, going for the famous Hip-Hop gangster look of dreadlocks and grillz, Arun Vijay is made to wear dental braces instead of the teeth grillz; hilarious. We almost pity the man when he is forced to look into the camera and say, I am a rare edition. Maybe the AI clips in the film are not to be criticised in isolation, as they seem to have the same level of thought and effort put into the rest of the film. The debates around AI killing creativity and originality rage on. But when the singularity arrives, and AI finally achieves consciousness, it might snarkily retort that we didnt leave enough for it to kill.(more)
