A decent romance that could have cut deeper
If there's one word that can be apt to define Joe, it's decent. For a film involving college life and youth, it is a very mindful film that gets its political messaging right. It treats its female characters with respect, and even when its protagonist uses verbal abuse, he's quickly corrected. It also talks about revenge porn and suicide in a responsible manner. It is also decent-enough in terms of craft and engagement value - not good or bad, but perfectly decent. Whether that's glass half-full or half-empty will depend on your frame of mind when you watch it.(more)

Weak writing pulls down this well-executed film
Joe resembles a number of films, from Hridayam and Arjun Reddy to Mouna Ragam and Raja Rani. However, while the feel is similar, the stories are quite different. The film ends with the quote, If the meaning of your life is lost, go find it. Well, for most of the second half, the meaning of the film itself is lost. If only the writing was better planned, the film would have been more than just an average Joe.(more)
