A Completely Messed-Up Family Drama

The humor falls extremely flat and the melodramatic emotional scenes can easily become the fun quotient. With the writing being convenient to the core and such lazy direction, there are no redeeming qualities. (more)

A comedy-drama that leans on familiar tropes

v=Brother is mostly performance driven. Jayam Ravi looks impressive with his typical towering presence. He brings a range of emotionsdancing, laughing, fighting, obliviousness, self-awareness, even cryingthat make him the backbone of the film. The supporting cast also adds flavor: Bhumika embodies the concerned yet supportive sister, while Priyanka Mohan adds to the glam factor. Nataraj has some energetic moments that suit his style very well. He's quick and sudden - probably even the actors are taken by surprise! Rao Ramesh steals the spotlight as the egoistic collector. Hes both funny and grating. Harris Jayarajs Makkamishi has generated some buzz, but the rest of the soundtrack is just passable. Brother is enjoyable in parts, though the soap-opera vibes detract from its appeal.(more)

Jayam Ravi shoulders this bland family dramedy

Ultimately, the weak writing bears most of the blame. Had Rajesh chosen to create a straight-up family drama without the forced comedic bits, Brother might have worked better. Instead, it ends up neither funny nor serious enough to make an impact. The camerawork and editing sometimes give it a soap-opera feel, and while Harris Jayarajs music tries to lift the film, only the catchy Makkamishi stands out.(more)
