An Unexciting Thriller!
Wastes a lot of time in the screenplay for romantic portions, re-establishing the villain again and again that too in the same style. A potentially intact script that fails to have a tight storytelling.(more)

An intelligently crafted action thriller
And in the few instances that we see the protagonist's smartness slip up, like in a crucial moment when Thiru establishes a connection when he knows that Arjun is hunting him down by finding out any link that leads to him, we start feeling as if it's the writer who has lost his plot. This is felt even more with Thiru and Maithili's romantic track, which mainly feels like something that the filmmaker has introduced as a relief to the tense hide-and-seek between the hero and the villain.(more)

Kalaga Thalaivan is worth your time, for the well written thriller portions and action scenes.
Kalaga Thalaivan is a good film without a doubt but could have been written better. If the romantic portion was blended more organically and had the film ended a few minutes before it actually did, it could have been even better. But the complaints aren't that big for this cat and mouse thriller. Can definitely give Kalaga Thalaivan a watch.(more)

A passive Udhayanidhi Stalin in Magizh Thirumeni's generic thriller
, Kalaga Thalaivan comes alive when the film takes the Thadam route with a half-effective twist during the midpoint. Again, it�s clever on Magizh�s part to lead the audience to think in one direction. But again, we have already seen this in Thadam. What is most disappointing is that the film exploits women as a device to show pain. Almost all the supporting characters who help Thiru out face a personal loss. And all of them either are daughters or wives who go through physical or sexual torture.(more)

Magizh Thirumeni spoils his few good ideas by spoon-feeding them
As far as the rest of the film goes, it shuffles between sequences of torture porn and a sheepish romance between Thiru and Mythili (Nidhhi Agerwal). On one end, Arjun keeps coming up with creative methods of torture to make his suspects spill the beans. On the other hand, you get some uncreative courtship of the lead. However, both end up being irksome and seem like fillers before the end credits can roll. What ends up making the film passable are the innovative ideas (though sporadic) and a well-cast villain (Arav is brilliant). Despite playing a formulaic role, Arav�s character works mainly due to his physical demeanor. I wish the film was only about his hunt for the protagonist. Clearly, that seems to be the strong zone of the director. But in an attempt to create what is generally called the �emotional core�, he ends up delivering a formulaic backstory that ends up being counterproductive.(more)
