Cracker Of A Commercial Entertainer!
Cracker of an entertainer that is packaged with theatre moments throughout but never goes out of the story. Second half could have been crisper, yet a paisa-vasool flick with many interesting elements.(more)

Sivakarthikeyan shines in an engaging but overlong fantasy entertainer
While the first half moves along at a fast clip with entertaining moments that make us break into a smile every now and then, the film's momentum slips up in the latter half. The laughs become a trickle, and the film kind of turns into hero service, with extended action blocks that become tiresome after a point. Also, after a lot of build up, the antagonist's character gets diluted. We get that the director wants to draw parallels between the protagonist and the antagonist - if one hears an unseen voice dictating his actions, the other has a voice directing him, literally, in flesh and blood, in the form of a childhood friend (Suneel Varma)! While this seems an interesting idea on paper, it doesn't translate that well on screen. A rescue attempt in the climax also feels forced. That said, despite losing some of its punch, the film remains engaging till the end.(more)

Sivakarthikeyan's non-heroic act is brilliant in this solid entertainer
'Maaveeran' is yet another solid entertainer that makes you enjoy and retrospect. It brings forth prevailing issues, such as corruption, poverty and petty politics. But, it is also a character study of how people will have to revolt for their basic rights.(more)

Madonne Ashwin's 'Maaveeran' starts off promisingly, with a great premise and an in-form Sivakarthikeyan, and slowly becomes tiresomely generic
While it's nice to see young filmmakers being courted by big stars, you wish they wouldn't lose their voice. For all its flaws, Mandela was quirky and unique. But in Maaveeran, the Big Idea gets mainstreamed to the extent that there's very little of that Big Idea left by the time the end comes around. Sivakarthikeyan is so earnest and so good that you want the writing around him to be better, to take him to more places a mainstream hero has not been taken. Some of you may say: "Why complain when there is at least this much invention?" But that is the exact problem. When there is so much newness, you want to see it taken all the way. You don't want to see it in a compromised form. But maybe these are the baby steps we are going to have to endure till the industry decides our heroes can do anything. With Prince and Maaveeran, Sivakarthikeyan has proved he is game for anything. Now, the writers and directors have to step up and repay this faith.(more)
