Fun in Bits and Pieces.

A dark comedy that had the potential to evolve as an entertaining experience ended up just as a mediocre outing due to the uneven screenplay. The freshness in certain ideas is not converted to its fullest on-screen.(more)

Gulu Gulu's inventive plot is let down by inconsistent writing

The one-liners of Lollu Sabha Maaran and performance of Mariyam George, who plays one of the kidnappers keeps the audience engaged then and there. Gulu Gulu has all elements to become a good film but Rathnakumar misses out on something similar to the search engines on internet.(more)

Santhanam's black comedy dishes a few laughs but nothing more

Director Rathna Kumar, who made Meyadha Maan and Aadai earlier and has contributed to Lokesh Kanagaraj's projects as well, has taken a new path with Gulu Gulu. While that is appreciable, the result isn't exactly the laugh riot that it ought to have been, thanks to the writing being all over the place. They named their lead character Google, but did not search enough for a coherent screenplay.(more)

GULU GULU IS AN AMBITIOUS EFFORT, BUT IT PLAYS LIKE SEPARATE PARTS OF A JIGSAW PUZZLE THAT NEVER COME TOGETHER

The story has several subplots. There's someone who wants proof of his father's love. There's someone who is afraid of old age. There's someone who lives as though every day is his last day, and therefore dedicates himself to helping others without discrimination. There's a fight around an inheritance. There's a cop out to get revenge. Theres something about the colours green and yellow, which are practically characters in the movie. Plus, there are several philosophies, too. For instance, live every day like it is the last day of your life. Or, every time a language dies, a race dies. Or, helping someone means you also end up getting used. There are also nice little ideas. There is, for instance, a celebration of menopause. "No more periods," yells a delighted woman. There is a gay man whose sexuality never becomes an issue. There's a man who collects unique artifacts. But these remain loose threads fluttering in the wind, as the tone of the narrative keeps changing direction. (more)

Excessive quirk marks this exhausting film

My most favourite scene of this film, in fact, is one thats not meant to be funny. Its about Santhanams Google punishing a police officer, and the manouevring he does to make it happen. Its a scene that shows smarts, and one that made me appreciate Santhanam in this rather silent, serious outing.(more)
