Cries For Empathy But Fails To Get The Trophy

Santhanam, playing the title character, tries to showcase the misery of a youngster who suffers from stammering. The intent with which his character has been designed directs the whole film towards a particular path. The sudden change in body language and performance makes you wonder if stammering is the only issue or if he is autistic too. Lack of sensitivity lets down the core intent of the film.(more)

Sabhaapathy is watchable for the comedy scenes, despite the engagement concerns.

Sabhaapathy is the kind of film that one would say, has a wicked sense of humor. It tosses aside subjective elements like morality and political correctness and wants to be outrageously funny. And when it tries that, it's successful for most parts. Especially the sequence that starts with a drunk Santhanam tearing his father MS Bhaskar's baniyan, and ending with him vomiting on MS Bhaskar's head, is one of the funniest, innovative parts of the film. Sabhaapathy is a mixed bag that has an equal share of positives and negatives.

Santhanam's latest has an exciting plot but is let down by tepid writing

The writing is to be blamed. The build up to the intermission, where Sabapathy finds the suitcase, is tiresome. Some of the scenes between Santhanam and MS Bhaskar work to an extent due to their performances. And, Cooku With Comali-fame Pugazh, who plays Santhanam's quarter loving friend of Santhanam on his big-screen debut, delivers a few one-liners. But barring a few such moments, no lines stick.(more)

Santhanam's latest hero exercise is another misfire

In this wholly forgettable, largely exhausting film, perhaps the only takeaway is Santhanams rather courageous choice to play a character that doesnt capitalise on his well-established dialogue strengths. Its a bit like Sivakarthikeyan doing Doctor (even if that was a far superior film). Perhaps the actor is still figuring out his sweet spot as a hero, perhaps hes still slowly devising his transformation. Id just be grateful if these public experiments were more rewarding. (more)
