It Is Both Similar And Different To Charlie!
The good thing about Maara is that those who enjoyed Charlie won't be disappointed and there are enough tweaks as well. Paaru's part in contributing to the romance of the elderly couple for instance. While Maara is definitely a different personality compared to Charlie, this also robs the Tamil version a certain effervescence and mystery that was synonymous with the titular character in Malayalam.(more)

R Madhavan's film demands patience of a hopeless romantic to invest in the story
Maara begins well. In the prologue, we see nurse Mary tell a wide-eyed girl Paru a magical realist story of a soldier and his soul. The narration and accompanying animation set us up to expect a whimsical world. Even by that expectation, when we return to reality after the prologue, the film struggles to reconcile the magical with the realism. (more)

Madhavan-starrer is enjoyable
Madhavan is appropriately loose-limbed and dishy, as he ambles through the film, spreading grizzled, warm charm. But even as you smile back at him, you wonder why we still need a man to be an all-round saviour. (more)

Lovingly crafted but somewhat underwhelming remake
The best thing about Maara is that it doesn't come across as a cash-in on a beloved film, but a lovingly crafted movie that respects its source material but also wants to be its own work. The cinematography, by Dinesh Krishnan and Karthik Muthukumar, is a rich palette of colours with the lighting adding warmth to the visuals. (more)

A pleasant watch
Maara is a cakewalk for Madhavan and he completely justifies the role given to him. Compared to the original, Dhilip has made enough changes to suit Maddy's age. Shraddha has also neatly portrayed her role. The big plus of the film is that both these actors didn't try to copy the mannerisms of Dulquer and Parvathy. Instead, they owned their roles and delivered original performance. (more)
