An Undercooked Tragedy!
Directed by Joshiy, Porinju Mariyam Jose, a tragic tale of localities and how their lives altered with the flex of destiny is novel as an idea but falls flat and sober as a film. Nyla Usha, who plays Mariyam shines in this otherwise detached and distracted film. (more)

An average masala entertainer
The whole movie is about these three characters and beyond establishing them, the plot remains rather wafer thin. The situations are mostly predictable as well and at times, unconvincing like the way the cops behave even after some murders. But what works for this film is the adept packaging by Joshiy and the terrific performances from the lead cast. The visuals and the music are good.(more)

A veteran director like Joshiy adapting to the changing cinematic grammar and seeing the solid performances of its lead actors are the pluses of Porinju Mariam Jose. With a script that isn't trying to be innovative in terms of narrative patterns, Porinju Mariam Jose is a watchable engaging Joshiy movie.(more)

Despite its ambition and good performances, Porinju Mariam Jose ends up being a watchable revenge drama
Joju George anchors the film with his brooding performance as Porinju. He appears to be extremely convincing and comfortable during the action scenes, while Chemban Vinod Jose puts up a spirited act as the disco-loving Jose. One of the most notable aspects of the film is the characterization of Mariam (played by a stunning Nyla Usha), whose boldness is shown with dignity and portrayed through a judgemental gaze. Despite the noteworthy touches, the predictability and over-stretched second half make Porinju Mariam Jose a mildly engaging fare that doesn't tap its potential.(more)

One may watch it for the spectacle at offer by the narrative genius and the unrequited love story in the sidelines.
Porinju Mariyam Jose is Joshiy's tribute to the 80s, the time and the movies of the time. Time and again, without being too nostalgic about the time, he pays tribute to Bappi Lahiri's disco, Kishor da's melody, Kamal Hassan, Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan. By referencing the climax of Moonram Pirai he also subtly hints at the sort of ending you could expect. The plagiarism dispute aside, Porinju Mariyam Jose has a good story at hand from Abhilash Chandran. (more)

Love in the time of class bias, an independent heroine and average writing
Porinju Mariam Jose is replete with cultural references from the 1980s and thereabouts. The many mentions of the decade's popular cinema and songs are fun due to their high recall value, but like much else in the film, they lack depth: they serve solely as markers of the time but beyond that tell us little about the characters.(more)
