Gang Leader shines in parts but is let down by a haphazard screenplay

Nani is the film's heart and soul and brings Gang Leader to life with his charm, wit and classic humour. But the haphazard nature of the script, a sluggish screenply and an overdose of melodrama hampers what had the potential to be a total laugh riot. The film's USP is its humour, but when even that isn't the best it could be, you know you're in trouble.(more)

Funny and Engaging

Gang Leader is a novel crime thriller which is filled with good fun and crsip narration. Nani leads from the front and is ably supported by some taut performances which hold the film well. The suspense and comedy go hand in hand and if you ignore the slightly dull climax, this film makes up for an engaging watch this weekend. Recommended.(more)

Gang Leader is an inventive, wildly entertaining comedy with a great ensemble performance.

Gang Leader's humour work mainly due to the effortless performances of its central characters. Saranya Ponvannan is a riot as the gang-member with a penchant for making Tamarind rice, while Lakshmi's punchy one-liners adds more to the lighter tone of the film. Nani effervescent portrayal as the pulp novelist Pencil Parthasarathy completely absolves the character from the tropes of a regular commercial hero, which emerges as one of the bigger strengths. Mirosla Kuba Brojek's cinematography excels in mood creation whilst balancing the lighter tone of comedy with the stark nature of a murder mystery. Overall, Gang Leader is an unpredictable and engaging comedy.(more)
