Aravan is agonisingly slow

At best some of that sweeping cinematography by Siddharth and Vijay Murugan’s sets are breathtaking, but that aside, this is one film which is not in the same league as the director's earlier films. (more)

Aravaan is brilliant

Aravaan is a slice of life from 18th century Tamil Nadu, with its lifestyle, humour, sorrows, loves and losses documented in painstaking fashion. This is an ode to history that deserves every bit of attention it receives. As such, it's one of those movies that deserve to become a legend. (more)

Aravaan:High on detailing and effort, low on engaging

There is an end card which says that capital punishment should be banned. But if this is what Balan wanted to convey, it baffles as to why he brought in 18th century Tamils. Aravaan is a wasted opportunity.

The structure of the plot wavers between the past and the present. It is an accepted form of storytelling but not here, when the present is hardly of any interest.(more)
