A violent revenge drama that is more intense than affecting!

A flavourless gangster film that is somewhat engaging only because its protagonist is a woman.

Gangster movies demand a certain directorial flair, but the direction here feels literal, a faithful reproduction of whatever existed on paper. Everything happens at an arm's length (the extreme violence and the suggestive sex we see on screen , and we end up with a flavourless film.(more)

A tedious, unimpressive revenge drama

The director shows a close-up shot of a corpse and the actor, unintentionally, blinks her eyes. The casting doesn't help either. Razia required someone with little more experience. Would Gangs of Madras been any different had it featured someone like Aishwarya Rajesh? You never know.(more)

A poor man's Kill Bill meets torture porn

A revenge and survival drama, with credible performance by its lead actor Priyanka Ruth, the film's writing is its biggest drawback. The film is graphically violent. After a point, the violence turns into torture and its excruciatingly painful to watch. Kumar's influence of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill is evident through the lead character Rasia, but she's no Uma Thurman. Gangs of Madras can be best described as a poor man's Kill Bill that meets torture porn.(more)

A violent and effective revenge saga

The story of Gangs of Madras might be predictable in nature, but again, which revenge saga isn't? CV Kumar is generally known for his small-budget films that, more often than not, turn out to be game-changers, and by telling a done-to-death story through the fiery eyes of Priyanka's Raziya, he has given this genre a much-needed fillip and has delivered a film that has all the potential to be one.(more)
