A punch in the gut about casteism!!!
Maari Selvaraj should be a very important filmmaker of our times. Not only is his voice important, he also seems well balanced. He does not propose overnight solutions. He understands that this battle is going to be a long one and as much the oppressed should stand up for themselves, his concern about having the oppressor too understand his/her fallacy is very apparent. The climax is a testimony to this. He does away with a climax that most movies dealing with this subject have resorted to. There is no conclusion as such to the thriving issue at hand.(more)

Pariyerum Perumal is a well-made film that makes you think and hits you hard right in the soul! Watch it for the team's overall effort
Caste politics, the importance of education, the rise of a man against the various means of oppression, and so much more is conveyed in different layers. To handle this story in a subtle yet engaging manner requires some expertise and being director Ram's erstwhile associate, Mari has definitely acquired these skills from him.(more)

Pariyerum Perumal is a hard-hitting anti-caste drama.
The director also effectively shows us how (dis)honour killings are passed off as accidents and suicides (one of these references the infamous Kausalya-Shankar killing). We get a character, an old man who is a hired killer, who proudly describes the murders that he commits for caste as "Kula saamikku seiyyara sevai". In a scene, we get to see a high-caste father tells his daughter's low-caste boyfriend that he shouldn't see her because the men in his caste would kill his daughter as well.(more)

A powerful, yet level-headed, drama about an oppressed youth carving out a place of his own
At first, I was apprehensive about what lay in store. The film opens with a card that says: Caste and religion are against humanity. No one doubts the truth of this statement, but I wondered if Pariyerum Perumal was going to be a finger-wagging message movie. There's a cringey bit when Pari meets the principal at the law college and says he wants to become a doctor� as in, Dr. Ambedkar. Again, a laudable ambition, but it�s too direct (plus I felt it wasn�t Pari speaking so much as the director). The writing in the early scenes is flabby. We get three scenes that show Pari struggling with English. (I loved the teacher who allowed him to cheat during an exam, though.) And a drunken scene in the second half feels out of place. But the simmering anger binds everything together. Yogi Babu helps. He gets some crackling lines and infuses some lightness that plays off against Pari�s angst.(more)

A passionately made emotional drama that has a realistic approach and strong performances.
Director Mari Selvaraj has come up with quite a familiar script. But his filmmaking is out of the box and the way he has presented the content stands a class apart. The screenplay tightly holds up at most places with frequently appearing intense sequences and plenty of realistic showcase of incidents. The dialogues are powerful and disheartening with respect to the situations too. Emotions have been handled with brilliance as the scenes are delivered in such a highly disturbing way. (more)
