Mr. Chandramouli

Interesting crux, average output

Mr. Chandramouli should have been extremely interesting on paper. On screen, it turns out to be a passable masala. But Thiru reinstates our belief that if he can polish a few rough edges he can make those really interesting thrillers in the commercial space.(more)

Mr. Chandramouli is largely underwhelming, mainly because of how formulaic it is

Every beat in the script feels not only familiar but also predictable. In fact, until the intermission, the film seems to be going on auto-pilot. The father-son bonding scenes feel perfunctory, and the romance hardly charming. Even the crimes are staged somewhat amateurishly - a passenger gets into the cab, the driver assessing his prey, close-up of sweat trickling down his cheek, followed by the frames getting filled with red and then the crime. This Gautham Karthik-Regina Cassandra starrer is a tiring watch

It could have been a film about fatherhood or a sports drama or a societal drama or an unconventional rom-com. Thiru rather throws convenient pieces from all these genres into the pot and serves us clichs.(more)

Gautham Karthik, Regina Cassandra can't save this formulaic, insipid entertainer

Mr.Chandramouli is packaged as a typical formulaic entertainer, rampant in the 1990s, for which still there is an audience in small towns and rural areas in Tamil Nadu.(more)

A would-be conspiracy thriller derailed by bad writing and infantile filmmaking

Mr. Chandramouli is actually a conspiracy thriller, a murderous game being played by corporate rivals. But for that angle to take off, we have to wait for the second half. In other words, the real villain in this story is the interval.(more)

This cocktail is a time-pass entertainment!

Gautham Karthik, in fact, is in pretty good form and it should be his career best performance. He does eye-popping number of stunts which are choreographed brilliantly and in the second half he scores with a rare medical problem. Regina and Varalakshmi are passable, while Sathish and Mahendran has nothing much to do. Mime Gopi is adequate. Santhosh Pratap as the main villain looks good, flex his muscles like few can but his acting chops need work. Karthik hams and tries to best to make the extremely affable title character of Mr Chandramouli work!(more)

Underwhelming affair that works in parts

Mr Chandramouli might have worked had the dialogues been better or if the comedy had worked or if the film didn't aim to tick all the genre boxes.(more)
