Vaagai Sooda Vaa will go down as a classic in Tamil cinema.

A well-conceived and well-made film. But it deserves patience and liking for such serious themes. Sargunam is clear about his priorities. He has not gone preachy anywhere, rather leaving audience to decide. (more)

Bhagyaraj’s screenwriting nuances, Mani Ratnam’s aesthetics and Bharathiraja’s raw realism.

Director Sargunam had control over every department. The quality, confidence, aesthetics, storytelling, screenplay and lack of compromise as seen in Vaagai Sooda Vaa qualify to be called a good film. Vaagai Sooda Vaa is a direct dig at Capitalism; that it concludes with big bold letters. (more)

A thought provoking film

It is a thought provoking film which is beautiful, complete and laced with social consciousness. It's a bittersweet tale of human frailties, a small film with a very big heart and a subtle message.(more)

This one is no Kalavani.

Despite the interesting milieu, the movie loses out on the most basic requirement: the story. The plot is wafer-thin, has been seen in countless melodramatic works from pre-MGR days, and gives you absolutely nothing new. The screenplay barely moves and the influence of movies like Paruthiveeran [ Images ] is obvious. Dialogues are dull at times, and situations are over-explained. Vaagai Sooda Vaa may have a few advantages going for it, but it hasn't really capitalised on these strengths.(more)

Strikingly Different!

'Vaagai Sooda Vaa' carries a strong message and is more a docu-drama touching up the economic struggles of the oppressed. On the flip side, a docu-feel and slow unfolding of events may mar the proceedings. However it is a good attempt indeed. (more)

As barren as the land it portrays.

From the ‘Kalavani’ team, one expected an equally delightful and an engaging film. The director’s intention to offer something different and off beat is appreciable. But ‘Vaagai…’ is more like a docu-drama. It documents Velu’s life and makes the audience more an objective viewer, than an empathetic part of his journey. (more)

For us city-dwellers, it is a welcome trip back to the villages and to a time when success wasn't defined by wealth alone.

Sargunam, his art director Cheenu and cinematographer Omprakash have carefully recreated the life in rural Tamil Nadu - especially the lives of brick kiln workers - in the 1960s, and deserve praise for their attention to detail - be it the production design or the clothing or the props. (more)

(more)
