A quirky misfire

The major issue with the film is that it happens to play out like a parody at times and then we have action scenes and even comical stretches that are downright silly (unintentional). How else would you explain the lyrics to a tune that goes like 'Yevan Edhirthaalum Thamizhan Jeippaan' that plays in the background as our hero takes on a horde of French henchmen. There are quite a few scenes that have us asking 'Was that supposed to be funny?'. (more)

A few scenes are far-stretched in the name of comedy, and the pace dips in the second half, but on the whole, Junga is fully worth your time and money.

There is a scene where he speaks French, which is sure to bring the roof down. The music (by Siddharth Vipin) is passable, except for 'Lokikkirya', which might turn into a troll groups anthem in the future. It also subtly parodies social media's obsession with one-hit wonders. Go with your families and friends and enjoy. Some of the dialogues will become part of regular conversation going forward. (more)

A gangster satire that digresses more than it entertains

Had Junga focused more on the 'Ezhai, Kanja Don', it would have been thoroughly enjoyable. Instead it becomes a product of something that the film itself criticises at a point.(more)

Vijay Sethupathi, Yogi Babu have crackling comic timing in an otherwise drab film

Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu have crackling comic timing. Sayyeshaa is the token eye-candy character, but does her scenes convincingly and dances well. Madonna Sebastin has hardly anything to do and the villainous characters like Suresh Menon are mere caricatures seen only in Tamil films. Saranya, who plays Junga's mother, and the old lady who plays the role of the grandmother, bring the house down with their antics. Siddharth Vipin's music is peppy and cinematography by Dudley is eye-catching. Other than Vijay Sethupathi, there isn't to Junga.(more)

Even Vijay Sethupathi cannot save this dull film

If you find the will to sit through the first half, you'll get a few laughs in the latter half. In the meantime, you'll have to question yourself on whether to endure all of that for a few laughs.(more)

The new Vijay Sethupathi film is a chaotic attempt at action, comedy, and hero worship

The narrative goes through the motions, too. The last time Vijay Sethupathi and Gokul came together, we got Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara, a film that wanted to be zany and was filled with "humour" that seemed to have been made up as they went along. The actor and director reunite in Junga, which is more of the same. Only, the hero worship we saw in the earlier film is much more in your face. Junga gets a Rajinikanth-like intro (with Baasha music in the background, plus he's a bus conductor), two heroines (Sayyeshaa as Yazhini, and a ridiculously underused Madonna Sebastian), French locations, and massive car chases featuring the French police and the Italian drug mafia. The only thing more bloated is the running time: 157 minutes.(more)
