One of a kind movie that encompasses so many things that it leaves your mind boggling!

The stellar cast does a brilliant job. This is the Kumararaja universe and you hardly see the stars as to how you are used to them and just because they have been cast we do not have them being given more prominence. Vijay Sethupathy is someone who cannot be compared to any other star that Tamil cinema has seen and you cannot imagine any other star willing to do the stuff he has done. It is not merely playing the transgender that I am talking about. The film ventures into zones that is hardly seen in mainstream cinema. And you know what? This isn't a film that exploits someone's miseries and plays it out like poverty porn. With so much talent, what is more heartening is that Kumararaja's priorities aren't misplaced. (more)

Super Deluxe is Bad? No. Is Super Deluxe good? No. Super Deluxe is a Masterpiece!

Thiagarajan Kumararaja proves that he knows the medium of cinema quite well. He beautifully narrates four stories, each dealing with concepts like sexual abuse, porn film industry, bullying, marriage, abuse of power, religion, nationalism, and finally what life is. All these are conveyed with loads of humour, and the film also reinforces the fact that you don't need to constantly feed the audience with one-liners to evoke laughter.(more)

A Unique, Ambitious, Insanely Detailed, Blessedly Amoral Drama That' As Epic As It Is Intimate

All of this would be little more than postmodern pranks if not for the film's magnificent design. This is not the first film to tell the story of three couples, but where earlier directors treated these stories like intimate domestic drama, Super Deluxe makes them something almost infinite, spanning the breadth of human (and other) existence. (Those ants! That centipede!) Thiagarajan Kumararaja has said he was sparked by the looping story-structure of Jafar Panahis The Circle, but I was equally reminded of something like Paul Thomas Andersons Magnolia, which gave the epic treatment to a series of mundane incidents that do not usually get the epic treatment on screen.(more)

There is ambition, genius, and also a beating heart.

Giving out anything more about the plot of Super Deluxe will ruin the fun and joy of experiencing something singularly unique. There is a heartless and horny cop, a quirky don, a publicity crazy politician, a greedy doctor, unwanted neighbours, a loyal Man Friday, and more in this crazy world that Thiagarajan Kumararaja has come up with. An unusual film with an assortment of quirky characters

In one of the earliest stretch, a character says, "Dai rascal! Enna maranthutiya?" For a moment, it felt as though Kumararaja was asking this question to us: it's been eight years since he made a film. If Super Deluxe is what you get from a filmmaker who was in exile, then you don't mind waiting a few years from now till he comes up with his next eccentric film. (more)

A Tamil Film, With a Cosmic Indie Vibe

The director Thiagarajan Kumararaja, who also had a hand in the script, takes his time setting all these shaggy, laconic story lines in motion. Part of the movie's pleasure in its early going is figuring out whether and how they will all merge. (more)

Super Deluxe is more than a worthy follow-up act to Aaranya Kaandam!

The long wait for Kumararaja's second film seems to have been worth it after all as indicated by how Super Deluxe has eventually turned out. A film that's bold and interesting within the commercial space. (more)

Vijay Sethupathi shines in film powered by honest writing, technical finesse

Technically, the film shines. Both the cinematographers, PS Vinod and Nirav Shah, have lit the frames effectively. Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score is in sync with the narration. Tapas Nayak's sound design along with G Balaji's colour grading is another plus. On the whole, Thiagarajan Kumararaja delivers a film of substance which also entertains.(more)

Benefits enormously from winning performances by its leads

The Alien connect is another master-stroke by Kumararaja, he also placed a dialogue "So you believe the existence of aliens only in the US) seems to his reply for non-believers. Ending the film by pulling off his own leg is another tongue in cheek moment created by the filmmaker. He compares Super Deluxe with formulaic sex stories filled with lust and ends on a moral note! He indeed finished his film with a sex doctor (Manushya Puthran) narrating the hidden secrets of life and ends his note with a wink, the nurse removes her specs and the end credits rolls. Interestingly, the porn film title is 'Vazhvin Ragasiyam' (Secret of Life)!(more)

Vijay Sethupathi Steals the Show

The movie is a ripping critique, scripted with biting sarcasm, of the plight of transgenders, the blind faith in religion and police cruelty, and Kumararaja does not flinch when he lets a top cop humiliate and harass a transgender, Shilpa (played by Vijay Sethupathi), and, later, blackmail a young Vaembu, forcing her to have sex with him in the presence of her husband, Mugil (Fahadh Faasil).
