A drama that fails to strike an emotional chord

Kaali looks more like an attempt to serve something to the audience who might have not identified themselves with a film like Vanakkam Chennai. But as the narrative proceeds we are not sure if this is Kiruthiga's cup of tea. The film is starved of surprises and the engagement quotient keeps decreasing. The novel idea of having Vijay Antony play various characters in different episodes narrated as flashbacks by different people does not make an impact on screen. It merely remains an idea. You need something interesting in these episodes to hold your attention. But they play out in a mundane manner with each episode having a mandatory fight sequence and a song.(more)

Kaali does get interesting in its second half, but the narration should have been tighter.

Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi deserves credit for attempting a concept that has so far mainly been used in whodunits to narrate an emotional drama. But with the reason behind Kaali's search for his parents not being really strong, we are not entirely involved with his search. Even the scenes in the present day, involving Punithavalli (Anjali, in an underwritten role) , a local healer, who serves as Kaali's romantic interest, don't add much value, to the plot. In the end, we are left with a few interesting notes - some characters, like RK Suresh's negative role, recurring in all the three stories, the reason behind the separation of the real parents. But they aren't enough to entirely salvage the film. (more)

This Vijay Antony Starrer Is A Decent Watch!

Though Kaali speaks about its own merit, the screen treatment could have been better considering its interesting storyline. Nonetheless, Kiruthiga scores pretty well with her overall rendition of output. Kaali is a decent watch(more)

The real tragedy of Vijay Antony's film

Kaali eventually finds the truth about his mother but we are past caring by that point. We do breathe a sigh of relief though as credits roll for we dont have to deal with another tragic story. And there, perhaps, lies the true tragedy of Kaali.(more)

Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi's slow-paced film is an out and out Vijay Antony show

The director has used a unique device in the flashback episodes by using Vijay Antony to feature in the "father's" younger days. The concept is the protagonist meets these characters who he suspects of being his father. So, the film becomes an out and out Vijay Antony show as he appears in four different characters in the film.(more)

Go for it if you enjoy emotional dramas with a social message.

The film has some heart in its story with competent acting and on par technical aspects. Her attempt to narrate an emotional drama like a whodunit thriller has come out with not so desirable results due to the flaws in writing.(more)

Blast from the past

Since the time he decided to get into acting, Vijay Antony has cleverly invested in scripts that have some good storytelling. Kaali is surely one of them.(more)

This Vijay Anthony film is a shallow tale about estranged love

Kaali would have been more effective had it been an anthology of three stories of estranged love set in late 1980s, where society plays the devil. Caste and communal violence are dominant themes in all these stories. Kiruthiga seems to be fascinated with the idea of saddening irony - the core of Romeo-Juliet's story but with a Devdas-que twist. We have a pining survivor here to tell the story.(more)
