Richie is a very different film. But sometimes that is not enough.

Richie is high on style. The film uses animation, non linear narration, quirky camera angles and episodes treated as chapters. This is not a film that you can write off as 'style without substance'. There is a whole lot happening but we remain indifferent to the events on screen. The emotional connect never happens and this hurts the film badly(more)

Richie scores is in the new-age-y treatment of its premise.

Gautham Ramachandran breaks up the film into various chapters through which we learn both about Richie and the events of the past. And in all these chapters, we get a sub-plot involving the treasure, which is a metaphor for the happiness that lies within each of these character's grasp only to elude them in the end.(more)

Nivin Pauly is impressive in this sometimes dark, dreary film

Nivin Pauly makes a decent Kollywood debut with his swagger and screen presence, though his Tamil dialogue delivery needs to improve. The director narrates the film as different chapters, like in a Tarantino film. One of the plus points is the music of Ajaneesh Loknath, retained from the original Kannada version, which is in sync with the narration (though at times it is a bit loud).(more)

This Nivin Pauly and Prakash Raj starrer works in parts

The staging and lighting in Richie, however, is remarkable. The film's dominant red shades in its lighting; hues and colours that aren't natural but gel well into the frame. The shades make Richie look slightly exotic, giving a comic book feel to the movie.(more)

A gangster tale

Director Gautham has taken pains in the characterisation it is heartening to see all three main actors being given due screen time but misses a trick in the setting of the stories(more)

Richie is technically sound, but misses on nativity connect and a strong engagement.

A film that is high on emotional content may not be what people would have expected from Richie especially after seeing the stylishly cut trailer, which looked massy. Shraddha Srinath fits the bill of a journalist, who takes the story forward. Natty is natural and emotes with his share of subtlety. His romantic portions with Lakshmi Priya Chandramoulis aren't strongly established, which is a concern. Aadukalam Murugadoss has done his role well. Raj Bharaths performance is apt at places but has a little amount of artificiality, which fails to bring out the desired emotions. Kumaravel has a small but significant character that serves an important purpose for the climax. (more)
