Naachiyar - Atypicaly typical!

Naachiyar is probably the Bala film that is closest to our mainstream sensibilities. It would be interesting to see where he goes from here.(more)

Nachaiyaar is a well made investigative thriller in a non-Bala style.

On the whole, with strong characterization, gripping screenplay, and top-notch performances, Naachiyaar is an interesting ride of emotions and realism.(more)

This Jyothika starrer is a moving drama on class disparity

The film shines the spotlight on the disparity between classes - the have-nots, those in power (here, it's those in khaki) and those who control the first two classes. GV Prakash Kumar and debutante Ivana, both extremely good in their respective roles, play the victims and Bala gives us a glimpse of the system through their ignorant, innocent worldview. Prakash shines in a role - he plays Kaathavarayan, who sells fruits and does odd jobs for a livelihood - that's unlike of what we have seen of him so far. Ivana is a great find and she does full justice to her character.(more)

This riveting Jyothika, GV Prakash starrer will keep you hooked till the end

Bala should be appreciated for making a gutsy and racy film in Naachiyaar, which leaves you in a happy state of mind at the end.(more)

Not your regular Bala film

Naachiyaar is Bala taking two steps back from Tharai Thappattai, which had reached 'torture porn' proportions. Bala's films usually feel like you're being attacked by a sledgehammer for no fault of yours. Naachiyaar, though lightweight for Bala, is still pretty devastating, even with its happy ending.(more)

Finally, a Bala film with a happy ending

The short run time (100 minutes) of the film has to be blamed for the audience not being given enough opportunity to start empathising with the characters. But it does feel good to see a Bala's film, that for once, focuses more on the good guys than the bad. And that also has a happy ending.(more)

Jyothika, GV Prakash Kumar shine in a surprisingly 'soft' Bala movie

There are people who watch his films seeking the exact same thing. If you belong to the first sect, you can walk in confidently. Your heart won't be ripped out but there is enough to yank it out of place. After all, it is a film by Bala.(more)

A telefilm that attempts to pass off as a film

Jyothika is a class act despite a shaky beginning, but that is mainly since we have never seen her in roles that demand her to be such a tough character. GV Prakash's role in Naachiyaar might seem familiar to some of the iterations portrayed by other heroes in Bala's films, but he certainly has improved. Ivana, the new find, who comes as GV Prakash's pair comes up with a decent performance and shows promise to be a good performer.(more)

Bala ditches the nihilism and makes his most generic, underwhelming film with this Jyothika starrer

But Naachiyaar does away with the blood and gore and nihilism, and we see how unstaged the Muslim wedding or the dinner scene in the Marwari household is. It's as though the editor patched together some random footage shot by the second unit. Bala may have made a different movie, but this is certainly not a Bala movie.(more)

A Film That Heralds The Return Of Director Bala

Go for it, to watch a master auteur back in form and some spiffy editing by Sathish Surya (the film is just about 100 minutes). As for the background score by the Maestro, let's stop with saying that a generation might fall in love to the interludes that play in the share auto. The way those in their 40s end up playing the BGM of Mouna Raagam or Punnagai Mannan in their heads when happy!(more)
