Messages Galore But What About The Movie?

Thondan never really comes together as a film. But as always, the standalone dialogues of Samuthirakani remain the key takeaway. (more)

Go for it if you are a fan of Samuthirakani and his bold messages

Kudos to Samuthirakani for paying tribute to Jallikattu protestors at the very beginning of the film and also for repeatedly reminding the youngsters that they should never let the fire die down in many scenes. Similarly, his dialogues put a lot of emphasis on how women should be respected by men and how the latter should differentiate between love and lust. He has also not forgotten to write scenes to punctuate the relevance on humanity over everything else.(more)

Thondan Movie Review

Thondan is largely a finger-pointing exercise that runs on predictable lines whenever it tries to be an issue-based film. In one scene, we see Samuthirakani playing to the gallery by talking about the jallikattu protests and breathlessly naming the different indigenous breeds of bulls that existed in the past. In another, he lectures Vignesh (Vikranth), his friend, after he stalks his sister, and makes his turn over a new leaf. But while we can appreciate the good intentions of the director, as a filmmaker, he does his film an injustice by making it preachy.(more)

Filled with a plethora of messages in an over preachy tone

The film also only appears like Samuthirakani's strategy to become a mass hero, sidekicks in the film speak high on his noble qualities and tries their best to register a Samaritan image for him. The villain-hero clash also turns out to be predictable that Samuthirankani easily wins the game by sitting in a dingy room and collecting all information through a laptop. Felt sorry for Vikranth, a good actor who is under-utilised here in a dumb role. In a cameo, Soori is a big relief.(more)

Samuthirakani in an old fashioned, preachy film

The writer, director, actor wants to milk sympathy out of every scene, and conduct a moral science class. Technically there is nothing much to 'review' camera and music is just functional. The only silver lining is the comedy of Soori and Thambi Ramaiah; both the characters look real and don't preach.(more)

A big basket of moral lectures

Worst of all is the comedy-romance track which seems to be inspired by a Vadivelu track in yesteryear film, Maayi. It's supposed to be funny that the heroine in disguise scampers across the neighbourhood at great speed, but it only motivates you to do the same from the theatre. It takes a Soori to eventually lend some comic respectability to the proceedings, and makes you wonder if Samuthirakani would end up making more entertaining films, if only he didnt take the mantle of moral teaching upon himself. But in its present form, Thondan is what you feared would happen once Appa did as well as it did.(more)
