Dark humour with sparks of brilliance

I am a bit undecided about whether the movie worked as a whole. It definitely has us invested with its wacky treatment. We have been exposed to black comedies in the recent past in Tamil cinema. But this one is cut from a different cloth. I am really not able to point at what did not work but there are small stretches where you feel that the comedy or even the emotional beats are not working to their maximum potential. But a heartful laughter is around the corner most of the time(more)

SAVARAKATHI MOVIE REVIEW

It is only in the final few minutes that the tone changes - and quite abruptly, at that. It is definitely disorienting, for all this while, we have been asked to laugh at these characters and now, the film wants us to empathise with them. Having played out as a black comedy until then, the film suddenly decides that it doesn't have any further use for comedy and trades it for pathos. But we do get a couple of Mysskin touches, like the one involving a cycle shop owner and Pichai. And the melodrama - a labour pain, a father embarrassed before his little son - in these scenes, which is heightened by Arrol Corelli's overwrought score, feels very much part of the film's universe. Mysskin starrer is funny, a bit over the top but packs an emotional punch

Savarakathi is a delightful dark comedy that raises pertinent questions about life and death. Thankfully, it never gets preachy, and therefore, works wholesomely, even when some edges are jagged. Mysskin as a writer shines again but it's his acting avatar that's sure to catch one's attention this time.(more)

Ram, Mysskin starrer is oddly fulfilling

Savarakathi is an odd film that is tough to slot. It doesn't floor you in amazement. But it keeps you hooked with its weird charm. As you leave the theater, there is a sense of fulfillment and longing at the same time.(more)

A warm and welcoming film

It is a film that keeps you on your toes, a film that never spoon-feeds you, instead expects you to read between the lines, to fill in the gaps for yourself and to decode the subtext. Overall, Savarakathi is a warm and welcoming film.(more)

A Mysskin-esque roller coaster of chaos!

The film also deals with certain emotions, ironies, and actualities of life. There are a few emotional sequences in the film, which may allow you to sympathize with the characters, but one may not find it as effective as intended. The film takes a pitiful turn towards the climax, and the purpose of the lead characters may be debated. Art film lovers may enjoy this film, but if you're looking for a commercial extravaganza, you may start to feel out of place at times. With or without reasoning, all the characters in the film are portrayed as loud personalities. On the whole, this Savarakathi may not be thoroughly sharp, but it definitely has its high points.(more)
