Logical Scares
Ra does offer a unique experience with concepts of demon, fourth dimension, doomsday and what not. We only wish the genre bending that the makers have tried out was more seamless. (more)

Watchable
Rarely do we see a Tamil movie with a lot of experiments as commercial movies are the order of the day, but debutant director Prabhu Yuvraj has touched a never attempted fantasy-horror genre with enough scientific explanation in Ra. The kind of research put in by the team is evident with the title itself; Ra means expropriation (Abagarithal) and they took the reference from ancient Tamil literature, Tholkaapiyam.(more)

A fairly well made thriller by debutants with strong technical backing
A palatial modern bungalow with few inhabitants, eerie silences broken by sudden sound bursts, doors that thud without any reason, whooshing resonance that forebode unnatural events, spirits that pop up at the most unexpected times and television and music system operating by themselves are some of the features that mark a paranormal thriller and Ra directed by newcomer Prabhu Yuvaraj has them all. A chariot pulled in different directions
All through the film and even well after it, you arent sure what the real story of Ra is. It seems like a medley of edible ingredients that doesnt make a tasteful dish. You realise how this must have come about when you pay attention to the credits. Much like a Wikipedia article citing references at the end, Ras end credits mention Hollywood films Dead Silence, Stir of Echoes, and Insidious under a curious label titled filmography. Eureka! The idea seems to have been to add a few original elements to a collage of impressive ideas from each of these films and somehow hope that this would result in a unique genre-bending film. (more)

Lovers Ajay and Ranya get married with the help of their friends, but the next morning, Ajay finds the girl dead on the bed. Heartbroken, he approaches a psychic to get in touch with her but his entry into her world only spells doom.
Finally, it looks like horror films in Tamil are coming of age. Ra is essentially a haunted house thriller but the writers Ashraf and Prabu Yuvaraj (the hero and the director of the film respectively) introduce an element of fantasy that gives it a different colour. And, their treatment isn't kitschy in the least bit and the director whips up a genuine sense of dread (Hollywood horror films Insidious, Stir Of Echoes and Dead Silence are listed in the titles under filmography). The plot revolves around Ajay, a young man, who finds his lover-wife Ranya, dead on the morning after their marriage. Disillusioned, he seeks the help of a psychic to help him get in touch with Ranya's ghost.(more)
