A Road Less Traveled.

NVM is a road film that involves interplay of multiple plots woven around diverse characters. A lorry driver undertakes a tough task of delivering certain goods for the sake of his trusted master. Little does he know that he is only a small part of a large network the aim of which is something destructive.Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe provides a rather pleasant journey with very few speed breakers. The problem is that neither the drama soaks us in completely nor the suspense angle, that despite being maintained throughout, brings us to the edge. (more)

Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe fails to impress.

The film traces his eventful journey. Two runaway teenage lovers belonging to different castes seek his help to escape their families. Chandru agrees to drop them at the next town. One-way Rajagopalan (Thambi Ramaiah) is the next to get into his lorry, but he is up to no good. And then finally there is Maya (Pia Bajpai) and her boyfriend, who have met with an accident and are stranded on the road.In just 114 minutes, Lakshmy has touched upon several issues: disastrous inter-caste love affairs, fragile relationships ruined by misunderstandings, the bond between father and son, mother and daughter, and political corruption. Despite all these elements, a good cast and excellent music, the film fails to hit the right notes.(more)

A must watch movie like never before

'Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe' is a movie about what we otherwise consider to be lesser concern, but is as essential to our daily life, as the basic necessities, for the attachment we have created to fuel. But not only has diesel drawn the limelight, some of the social injustices and life after that, are also added in subtly. The story is based in and around port city of Karaikal. A couple from different financial and religion-based communities find the perfect match in each other. Obviously, this is vehemently opposed in their village, and they have no option but to run for life. A youth from an ostensibly well to do family strays to follow his heart, oppose his father and drive trucks and lorries, ferrying goods for the thrill. A girl from an affluent background refuses to understand her mother, for the mystery of who he father is. These three are linked in the common thread of travel.(more)

One can't help but feel that the narration could have been better

There are too many characters walking in and out of each scene and hence each actor gets only few scenes on the screen. Shruti Hariharan of Lucia fame though appears in a brief role does her part well. Piaa looks gloomy most part of the film and her sudden change of mind falling for Shabeer is not gratifying. Thambi Ramaiah is loud and Bala Saravanan fails to evoke laughter. Y.Gee Mahendra proves his versatility once again. At times the screenplay meanders and drags. With the backdrop of liquid gold crisis, Lakshmy touches upon various social issues in the film like terrorism, smuggling, casteism, gang rape, disagreement between children and parents, thankfully in a subtle manner. Music by Madley Blues goes well with the theme of the flick. Though Lakshmys attempt is laudable, one cant help but feel that the narration could have been better.(more)

A story that interests you to a larger extent, which could have been done better

Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathey (NVM) is about the events that unfold in totally unconnected lives on a day when the state suffers from petrol/diesel crisis. Although on the surface of it, it might appear that the scarcity of liquid gold is the premise, the director has in fact woven other topical and important issues that plague the society in a very subtle but pithy fashion.Lakshmy should be appreciated for taking on a subject and adhering to its elements sincerely rather than leaning towards unnecessary appendages in a flick that runs in a crisp duration of one hour and fifty four minutes.(more)

A fuel crisis has thrown life out of gear across the country. A lorry driver is making a clandestine trip from Trichy to Karaikal carrying 2,000 litres of diesel.

Using a multi-strand narrative, Lakshmy Ramakrishnan constructs a film that is part road movie, part thriller, and part drama. The film is set against the backdrop of a fuel crisis and there are at least a dozen key characters. There is Chandru (Shabeer), who agrees to transport 2,000 litres of diesel from Trichy to Karaikal for politician Kaleeswaran (AL Alagappan); Subramaniam (Y Gee Mahendra), his petrol bunk owner father, who is always criticizing his ne'er-do-well son; Chokku (Bala Saravanan), his friend, who keeps waiting for his heirless chithappa to die so that he can become a rich man.
