Kamal all the way!
The film is gripping and very well executed. The film is a spectacle. What is quite interesting about this directorial venture of Kamal Haasan is the way it is narrated. With more than a dozen people in each frame, Virumaandi is not an easy film to make, but both the director and the cinematographer have done an amazing job. Virumaandi is definitely a Kamal film but this one belongs to Kamal the director, not Kamal the actor. (more)

The man is a perfectionist.
This simple and straight story is told through a brilliant narration. Kamal is brilliant as usual, but Pasupathy is stand out. As a director, Kamal has not missed out on any nuance or subtle points. Ilayaraja's songs are soothing but the re-recording (his strength) seems a bit loud. But Virumandi, it seems, would not have happened but for art director Prabhakar. He is perhaps the man of the film. (more)

Another noteworthy step forward for Kamal.
Eulogizing the performance of an actor of Kamal's stature can only be redundant. Virumaandi is not your usual cinema hero. Abhirami has lived the role. Entrusted with a solid role, Pasupathi walks through it with the ease of a veteran. The meticulous eye for detail that has gone into the concept of every small and big scene of "Virumaandi" is another elevating aspect. Re-recording is minimal and wherever it comes into play, it's superb. (more)

A film with a message.
Kamal Haasan has excelled as Virumaandi. He has given a magnificent performance. Pasupathy has stolen the show. Illayaraja's music is yet another plus point as his music goes well with the subject and narration. Virumaandi will sure to go places.(more)

Class Act.
Kamalhassan’s Virumaandi is a vital, sardonic and disturbing brave attempt at good cinema with a provocative message. The film at times looks arty with its documentary approach to story telling. Ilayaraja's music is melodious. Kamal Hassan is astounding. On the downside there is too much blood and gore and violence against women, which could have been avoided. Still Virumaandi is a cut above the common place. (more)
