The cast pulls off their acts well and leave you with some feel-good moments

It's all about everything happy, happy. So let's stick to being 'slap happy'. Hence, the good things first. The extra Happy Ending, with the cutest scene in the movie being producers, Gauri and SRK's beautiful baby Abram looking angelic. And an appearance by director Farah Khan's terrific triplets. Throw in Abhishek Bachchan's tapori snake dance and bouts of 'Englis' speaking. Add on Shah Rukh's dimpled charm (unmissable greased fab-abs - gets a lot of close-ups); and yes, Deepika's glossy, massy 'Lovely' dance number. But hold on, review abhi baki hai mere dost. The story is simple, perched on a lavish canvas - glitzy, glamorous, gorgeous bodies (read: male torso) and with self-deprecating humour which stands out and entertains in parts (a recap of moments from SRK's own films!). The first half spends too much time setting a plot that's fairly uncomplicated. It's not a film about an ingenious heist (far from 'Oceans Eleven') or dance, it's a film about everything genuinely Bollywood - where logic gets a 'fit', gloss covers up the glitches, cameos creep in without a warning; and the rest of the plot finds comfort in the hero's hot-bod (anything from 6 to 8 packs - take your pick!) and outstretched arms. The cast pulls off their acts well; and leave you with some feel-good moments, but not enough to last three long hours.(more)

There is no dearth of gloss in Happy New Year, but everything else in the film

The aforementioned competition constitutes the spine of the film and it is very weak and spindly indeed. It just cannot bear the weight of constant overload. Being a Farah Khan film, Happy New Year also tries to be funny. The actors do all they can to help the director achieve that end by going overboard with their merry hamming. It isn't a pretty sight. It is obvious that huge amounts of MONEY have been sunk into the making of Happy New Year. It is apparent at the same time that the makers have been exceedingly stingy in the matter of putting some thought into the glitzy effort. It is all very well for an ageing superstar to go all out to prove that he still possesses the magic of yore, but when the past hangs heavy over the proceedings it is a sure sign that the law of diminishing returns is catching up fast. Deepika Padukone, given an atrocious accent inspired no doubt by her Chennai Express act, is the eye-candy who has been roped in to provide the feminine counter-balance to the generous male skin show on the screen. There is no dearth of gloss in Happy New Year, but everything else in the film, including the content and its treatment, are allowed to go for a toss. (more)

All in all, HAPPY NEW YEAR is definitely a smash hit film, which has blockbuster written all over it

With mega blockbusters like MAIN HOON NA and OM SHANTI OM behind her, director Farah Khan (who also doubles up as the film's writer along with Mayur Puri and Althea Delmas Kaushal), by now, seems to know audience's taste when it comes to masala movies. And maybe that's why she makes absolute no mistake while serving the dish called HAPPY NEW YEAR. While the soul and the story of the film remains truly Indian with Bollywood masala, comedy et all... Farah has managed to make a glossy film with stunning visuals. The film is a bit stretched with its run time going to almost 3 hours, the comic moments, dance and music keeps you engaged. Abhishek Bachchan is back to doing loud comedy in this film after BOL BACHCHAN. In this film, be ready for a double dose of Abhishek as he is seen in a double role. Do not miss his take on his father Amitabh Bachchan's iconic dialogue 'I can talk in English and walk in English'. The ever-versatile Boman Irani, yet again proves that he is a bankable actor and such roles are tailor made for him. Full marks to him for proving right the saying, 'Age is just a number for real performers'.(more)

A must watch especially if you want to treat your family for a highly entertaining movie

Almost the entire first half of the movie, until the intermission, is a bit of a disaster. The second half, featuring more dancing and the fruition of the heist plot, is a good deal more fun. The heist sequences are tensely staged, goofily over-the-top convolution in the spirit of Ocean's Eleven or Shahrukh Khan's own Don remake and sequel, defying logic and even rational linearity at every turn, and quite fun. But it's the dance sequences, featuring cortex-melting costume design and Farah Khan choreographyit's not her best work, but even a slightly off-her-game Farah Khan towers over mere mortalsgo a long way toward making the whole enterprise worthwhile. But that's one of Happy New Year's principal reasons for being: everyone in the movie is a star.(more)

A perfect Bollywood potboiler for the festive season

The entertaining content plus the added star value of Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Farah Khan entertainer with SRK having hit music and positive word of mouth will attract more and more legs to the theatre. As Charlie aka Chandramohan, Shah Rukh Khan does what he does best. If you are an avid fan of the King Khan, you will not be disappointed. The first few minutes of the film feel like a video portfolio of the actor. You will be bombarded with close-ups, long shots, mid-shots and extreme close-up shots of Shah Rukhs six-pack. Ladies, you can scream now. Oh yes, he also reprises his signature move. Deepika Padukone steals the show as Mohini. Sonu Sood gives a good performance as the robust Jag. Even though some of the puns are utterly ridiculous, Boman Irani and Abhishek Bachchan provide the necessary comic relief. Jaggu dada (Jackie Shroff) as Charan Grover also does an impressive job. Perhaps, more onscreen space for him in the future would be a good idea. Also, dont be surprised to see Bollywoods elite stars in cameos in the film.If you are a die-hard fan of Shah Rukh Khan, dont miss Happy New Year. He will make you swoon with his charm and the superstar attitude. Everyone else can watch Happy New Year for its twisted dialogues, Boman and Abhisheks comic timing and of course, the mesmerizing Mohini. Let the festive season kick in with a bang, with Charlie and his gang.(more)

It's grand, beautiful, shot in exotic locations across Dubai

Farah Khan's masala flick Happy New Year has everything going well businesswise but it's extremely low on content. It's grand, beautiful, shot in exotic locations across Dubai, has all the SRK moves which fans love, a hit Jodi (Shah Rukh Khan - Deepika Padukone), it's visually appealing but there is nothing else apart from that! Happy New Year is a heist thriller with a lot of naach gaana. Charlie (Shah Rukh Khan) wants to take revenge from Charan Grover (Jackie Shroff) because he betrayed Charlie's father (Anupam Kher), which landed him in jail and led to his death.(more)
