Better to watch the older version again.
Dhanush is a natural at these types of roles and excels. Manisha looks lackluster throughout. There could not have been a worse debut for Hansika Motwani, as all she has to do is to look pretty and prance about in the dance sequences. If you are among those for whom 'Mappillai' holds a lot of nostalgia, give the latest version a miss. Rent a DVD of the older version to avoid any disappointment.(more)

This Mapillai entertains in parts.
Suraj has attempted a remake of super star's film but has only been half way successful in his task. It is Dhanush's nonchalant performance and screen presence that takes the audience through the happenings. Mapillai suffers from weak characterization especially of its lead character Manisha Koirala. There are many logical loopholes. Hansika makes her debut and the girl looks plump and cute and excels in midriff exposition. The costume designer has done a good job.(more)

Watch it at your own risk!
The film has a heavy dosage of so-called comedy and is littered with some fun-filled sequences. Vivek creates maximum irritation. Hansika's contribution is little else besides looking pretty. Music by Mani Sharma is a big let down and could be one of the reasons if the film fails to make the cut at the box-office. On the whole, the movie is a bad remake, but is saved from becoming a disaster thanks to the charm of Dhanush and the grace of Manisha Koirala. (more)

A bad copy of the original.
Suraaj has added some mass elements for Dhanush, making no bones about the fact that there's no logic or common sense to look out for. It's just spice, humor, and plenty of silliness thrown in for good old entertainment. Go with low expectations. The only saving grace is the humor quotient, particularly in the climax. While the first half moves at the reasonably good pace, the second lags, largely because you already know what's going to happen next. Every sequence is predictable.(more)

Family man.
Dhanush is the man of the match. He takes the whole burden on his shoulders and passes the difficult test of enacting a famous role played by Rajinikanth with consummate ease. Cheers to young Hansika Motwani. Cute and bubbly, she has a meaty role to play in her maiden venture itself. Watch out for Manisha Koirala. She performs with a steam and vigor. Vivek brings the roof down with laughter. Music by Mani Sharma is an added strength. (more)
