THOONGA NAGARAM

Another tale of Madurai attempting to be different.

Gaurav proves himself a good director by bringing out decent performances from the lead cast as well as the supporting cast. What plays spoilsport in this potential entertainer is the addition of excessive sub plots and songs. Cinematography by Vijay Ulaganathan and music by Sundar.C.Babu is good. On the whole, this film is engaging in certain parts and has good performances from all the actors. The film would have been crisper and better if the focus was more on the main plot.(more)

Where roles and reactions leave you confused!

It's hero Vimal's third film and once again he's at home. Anjali is a natural as always and Bharani proves a right choice. Yet, if the film doesn't impact much, it's because the characterization of the main characters is flawed. Certain sequences are thrillingly shot, but Gaurav's screenplay is slightly lethargic and many significant matters happen in near darkness. Hence slowness and ambiguity mar the tempo. Santhanam's authentic art work needs mention. (more)

Thoonga Nagaram has its moments.

Director Gaurav makes a good point of bringing up what lies beneath. It's even engaging, most of the time. After a fairly slow first half, the screenplay picks up pace in the second. There are a few edge-of-the-seat moments that work quite well. Sundar C Babu's music isn't very effective. Vijay Ulaganathan's camera-work on the other hand, is excellent. This film's USP is the friends and their camaraderie. (more)

Racy, riveting and entertaining.

Three cheers to Gaurav for making a taut screenplay that is engrossing from scene one. A team of youngsters have come together to ensure the movie is bubbly and breezy all through. The director has ensured that the characters reflect reality and etched them out well. Vimal is impressive. Anjali is cool, simple and suave in her portrayal. Sundar C Babu's music is foot-tapping. Vijay Ulaganathan's camera work deserves special mention. Suresh's editing is crisp.(more)
