United we stand!
Ilaignan is an attempt at recreating a period that is rarely seen in Tamil cinema. It would have made very interesting viewing if the period had been carefully and flawlessly reconstructed inch by inch. Instead, what we get is a half-baked reconstruction which looks authentic in parts and immature in others. A lack of consistency in maintaining the period feel throughout the movie dampens the viewing experience. Thotta Tharani and his team have brought out some awe-inspiring sets. (more)

Below average.
The film does not work mainly due to an out dated and clichéd storyline and presentation. Comedy is injected into the narration through a Vadivel track. Action scenes are all over the top and the much hyped ship looks like cardboard. Pa Vijay tries to be a Rajinikanth and Vijay rolled into one. Less said about other characters the better.(more)

Fails to make an impact.
The story has an epic grandeur to it, befittingly matched by mammoth sets (some magnificent work by Thota Tharrani) and a battalion of actors and junior artistes who fill nearly every frame. Despite a grand canvas, Ilaignan fails because of shoddy acting and a melodramatic narrative. There are no crests and troughs in the story, and almost all the sequences are uniformly loud. The music by Vidyasagar just about passes muster.(more)

Young at heart.
No doubt the script is outdated. But no complaints, since Ilaignan is a period film and the intentions are made clear from scene one itself. Pa Vijay has played his part to perfection. Equally impressive is Kushboo. Suman is good. Music is by Vidyasagar is nice to listen to. B L Sanjay's cinematography is bright and apt for the theme. But all credit should go to Thotta Tharani, who has put up a huge set.(more)

Family entertainer.
Though promoted as a movie with strong political messages, Ilaignan emerges as a commercial movie. The actors chosen to essay the major roles, in a film of such magnitude are surprisingly new comers. The movie comes as a surprise package from “Kalaignar" Karunanithi, as the story and screenplay is fresh. Director Suresh Krissna, with the vast experience he has, had made sure that with a huge budget at his disposal, he makes the best use of it to provide a family entertainer.(more)
