Illogical.
Mithran Jawahar usually has a knack for successfully translating a script from another language to suit Tamil audiences, but this time, the attempt fails, largely because Gopi Mohan's story isn't all that engaging. Once again, Dhanush proves that he's entirely capable of shouldering a whole film, no matter how silly its script. He's the only reason the movie is at least halfway watchable. Otherwise, Uthamaputhiran is fluffy, frothy, impossibly light and has no business with logic or reason.(more)

Uthamaputhiran is your perfect Diwali outing. Go for it
Uthamaputhiran is sheer popcorn entertainment, which is a crackling comedy and director Mithran Jawahar keeps it light, fluffy and funny. There is a real sweetness in the presentation that will keep you smiling long after you've left the theater. Dhanush adds the little touches that make all the difference and he is an actor you can't take your eyes off. Genelia is spontaneous and sparkling. Even small characters pitch in commendable performances. Vijay Antony's music is average.(more)

Diwali outing for the entire family.
If a clean family fare, full of fun and humor (clean, no double entendres), no 'superman-ism', no glamour, little bit of sentiments and a slightly melodramatic climax is your idea of a good entertainer, then you certainly have found the 'Uthama' entertainer for Diwali. Right from the outset, the director makes it clear that his aim is to entertain the audience. Scripting and direction really show their maturity with the pacing of the movie. (more)

Clean entertainer.
Very sensibly, director Mithran Jawahar has done away with many of the unwarranted segments found in the Telugu original, Ready. Vivekh's poker-faced comedy is a highlight, and dialogue adds to the appeal. Another perky part for Dhanush, and he pulls it off comfortably. Genelia is a treat to watch. A few foot-tapping numbers come from Vijay Antony. Another mela from Mithran, of course, with its share of highs and lows!(more)

Son shines.
Mithran Jawahar and Dhanush have teamed up to present a family entertainer which is pleasant and entertaining. A cool and a casual Dhanush, Genelia with her girl-next-door-looks, an expressive Vivekh and a bunch of apt star cast make the film a memorable watch. Though the movie has several sequences that are cliched and too predictable, a creditable show by the characters and presentation makes it engrossing. The movie has catchy tunes by Vijay Antony.(more)

Neat family entertainer.
The screenplay and direction make it worth one's while to watch this oft-repeated theme. Dhanush and Genelia's on-screen chemistry, good supporting cast, smooth editing and superbly-choreographed action sequences give this movie a new look and feel, in tune with youngsters' expectations. Dhanush is quite impressive with his looks, body language and dialogues. Genelia is at her best. Vivek has once again given a brilliant performance. But Vijay Antony's music lacks freshness. Overall, Mithran Jawahar has given yet another neat family entertainer.(more)
