VILLU

Critics Review

Not worth risking your patience.

With tacky production values, shabby cinematography and amateurish direction Villu comes across as a more than two-hour long torment that only less people deserve – those who have committed some unpardonable crime, perhaps. Nayan's presence serves the purpose of eye candy. Although Vadivelu’s comedy track is boisterous and loud, it serves as a saving grace for the movie in many instances. Ravi Varman’s cinematography disappoints. For all these reasons Villu, in all probability, could even tire out the loyal fans. (more)

The ingredients are fine — proportions are the problem.

Prabhu Deva could have had a surefire potboiler provided he had worked more on the screenplay. The enigmas that remain unsolved can be ignored, but the treatment that gets trying towards the end, cannot. Vijay’s footwork is amazing. Ravi Varman’s camera work sparkles in the fight sequences, accentuating the tempo of the scenes. 'Fefsi' Vijayan has worked really hard on the fights in Villu. Devi Sri Prasad’s numbers are peppy but when they keep following one another often they become a bit too much. (more)

Adventures of a Tamil James Bond.

Role-wise, Vijay seems to have genuinely enjoyed his outing here. Ravi Varman's camera showcases Vijay lovingly, while Kola Bhaskar's editing keeps things slick and sharp. Devi Sri Prasad's songs are all meant to wring the best out of the star-cast. Its Prabhu Deva's screenplay that makes you sit through the movie. Appropriate twists and turns - even if logic has taken a toss and quite a few loose ends are never tied up - make sure you're awake. (more)

Loose strings.

It's a wholesome Vijay show. The actor is at his best – be it the stunt sequence, comedy or romantic episodes. The story is as old as that of "lithic" age. Prabhudeva has laced it with commercial elements including comedy and action. Vadivelu tries his hand at evoking comedy and succeeds fairly. Devi Sri Prasad has come up with some peppy numbers while Ravi Varman's cinematography is passable. Thanks to Fefsi Vijayan's stunts Vijay has belied law of gravitation.(more)

Made for Vijay fans.

The movie is a fast-paced commercial entertainer targeting the mass audiences, especially Vijay fans. This movie with an outdated story is completely shouldered by Vijay's screen presence and music by Devi Sri Prasad. Nayantara never fails to sizzle on screen with her seductive costumes. Vadivelu has delivered a below-average performance. The cinematography and costumes are excellent. Stunts deserve special mention. (more)

Go for it.

What works in its favor is the star cast, packaging and look of the film. It is the most stylish Vijay film ever made. Villu is technically slick and moves at a rapid pace. The director, however, is less concerned with the film's plot and the pre-climax portion lacks punch as the story goes limp. Prabhu Deva and his team of choreographers have provided picture-perfect peppy songs, lavishly picturized in exotic locations with superb camera movements. (more)
