Slick and neat.
The saving graces of Vel include the fact that it is slick, neat, moves at a brisk pace to keep everyone interested, displays no cleavage and has very little blood and gore in spite of the violent storyline. Though he has to walk along a thin line that identifies the two characters he plays, Surya has done justice to his double-role. Yuvan Shankar Raja's tunes are catchy.(more)

A masala sale.
The movie has nothing new to offer and has all the aspects that one can expect of director Hari. As usual, Surya has given his best. Asin is her bubbly self enjoying every bit of it. Vadivelu's comedy is stale barring a few scenes. Music, scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja, is very average. The movie, before the intermission drags on and on but the second half moves at a faster pace, thanks to the screenplay. (more)

Suriya breathes fire into corn.
Though it is disappointing to see him too walk with the camera below the crotch, Suriya makes the most clichéd situations incredibly believable, breathing fire into his corn-ball punch-lines with great conviction. It is a twin treat for his fans no doubt. Asin has very little to do, Kalabhavan Mani makes for a hammy comic villain entertaining with his eccentric presence and Vadivel brings the roof down with a charm that defies all logic, even with the stupidest of lines.(more)

Above Average.
Surya in a dual role has pitched in with yet another fantastic performance. Asin looks pretty and does what she is expected with grace. Vadivel is enjoyable in his crass buffoonery act. The biggest letdown is Yuvan's music, which to put it mildly is bad. It is the brisk pace of the film which makes it a racy entertainer. (more)

Racy entertainer.
Hari, one of the best commercial directors in Tamil, has lived up to the expectations in 'Vel'. He has presented a racy film that provides a perfect entertainer. The movie has action, sentiment, and romance. The script, which is compact, is well complemented by the performances. Suriya's on screen chemistry with Asin clicks once again. Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is soothing to the ears. (more)

A dual treat.
Director Hari's fine touch lies in neutralizing the violence element in a heroic character through suitable sequences explaining and justifying the same. Vel's cast is appealing, yet pre-dominates screen space. Still, each and every character has a unique significance and continuity that flows smoothly with the main theme. Camera work is brilliant, capturing the extensive spread of green fields and bubbling waterways. (more)
