Vijay of yore is back as Kaavalan

First off, Ilaya Thalapathi Vijay deserves kudos for shedding his action/political persona and digging his toes in and choosing a script that focuses on comedy and emotions. It says a great deal for Vijay's commanding screen presence, comic timing and spontaneity that he can take logic-less scenes and make them completely his own. For a nostalgic return to the Vijay of old, comic interludes and lack of double-edged dialogues and future plans, Kaavalan works.(more)

Vijay (re)turns romantic! Feel good – Feel emotional!

Kavalan is redemption of sorts for Vijay – the actor. A relatable love story shot in a cute and simple manner, rich with emotions, but on the slow side of narration. Yes, there is nothing special, but nothing to grumble about either!(more)

A welcome change for Vijay

Vijay bounces back with a sincere, down-to-earth performance in 'Kaavalan'. It is a welcome change. 'Kaavalan' is vintage Vijay on display and is proof that if he keeps away from superhero mannerisms and sticks to the vision of the director, there are a lot of good movies left in him. (more)

Family Entertainer

Vijay, the one man entertainment troupe has bounced back with Kaavalan. It’s super fun, perfect Pongal family entertainer and fits in with the spirit of the season. The comic escapades of Vijay and Vadivel are a scream, song placements are perfect and romance is subtle but touching. The film lacks a creditable storyline, but has been packaged keeping humor as its base, which makes it an engaging watch. (more)

A strong comeback by Vijay

Vijay has made a strong comeback with this film. He has given an excellent performance. However, the story appears hollow at some parts. Director Siddique should have worked more on the script. Though, he has made some changes to suit Vijay's image, there are holes in the movie. Kaavalan lacks totality, but is a commercial entertainer and appeals to all.(more)

Kavalan - Ex-serviceman

‘Kavalan’ is no doubt a different Vijay film. Yet, it is no different movie for it has got nothing big to offer but for Vijay’s terrific screen presence coupled with his neat performance. Take away Vijay and Vadivelu (who provides relief in a few scenes), ‘Kavalan’ could make you squirm on seats, courtesy an outdated script and age-old style of narration.(more)
