Raavanan is all style, little substance

Raavanan is a beautiful travel package that shows you the best of Mother Nature, and considerably less of human nature. The screenplay, instead of cruising along, stutters and stammers. Suhasini's dialogues make you cringe. There are no twists and turns, nothing in the narration that shows intelligence leaving the viewer detached, with nothing to relate to. Go with low expectations, for it has lots of style but little substance(more)

Not among Mani's best

Raavanan is good in parts, an off-kilter cinematic experience. It is technically the finest movie made in recent times, superb camerawork. The major plus is the actors, but the story and screenplay by Mani Ratnam and Suhasini are a big let down. The film lacks the Mani Ratnam touch in the story and screenplay department, and has a wobbly first half, where the story just does not move. Raavanan will never feature among Mani Ratnam 10 best films. Nonetheless, it is not to be missed. (more)

Watch Raavanan, it’s visually poetic!

Raavanan is a pure cinematic retreat spanning across the dense jungles of Southern and Central India with exceptional cinematography (Santosh Sivan and Manikandan), by-now cult songs (A R Rahman) and interesting performances by its lead actors. And the significance of the movie appears in the same order mentioned above. A major drawback is the lack of ‘Tamil’ feel in the film and its music; it more appears for the audience north of Vindhyas in many places.(more)

Ten Faced Persona

'Raavanan' is cinematic brilliance. Watch the movie without expectations and watch it for what it has to offer rather than searching for what you want! ‘Raavanan’ is for those who appreciate quality cinema ingredients - Director’s touch, camera, art, etc are prominent yet something is missing. Watch it for Mani Ratnam's direction expertise, Vikram's performance, Aishwarya's beauty and the beautiful locations! This was branded Mani’s best movie by a few but on second thought, the master’s best is yet to come. (more)

A masterstroke yet again

A solid story, a fairly taut screenplay, well-rounded characters and able direction set Raavanan apart. Plaudits to Ratnam for scouting for, and zeroing in on some of the country's awesome virgin locations! Living up to the hype and hoopla of a product isn't easy. Raavanan has done it. Eventually it's the treatment that makes the end product a bane or boon for the viewer. Raavanan is a boon!(more)

Cheers Madras Talkies and Mani Ratnam

With a huge star cast chipping in with their best, mesmerizing shots, crisp editing and riveting music, 'Raavanan' ends up satisfying the appetite of the masses. All credits to Mani for rendering a movie that is engrossing and entertaining from the very word go. Running for little more than two hours, 'Raavanan' will go down in the history of Tamil cinema as one of the finest and best. (more)
