Will Director Ameer get a Red Card?
2012 has started out to be a dark year for Tamil movie industry with introduction of various taxes, FEFSI-Producers strike, Producer council coming up with arbitrary rules on when a movie should release, etc. Now, the workers decided to not work for Alex Pandian based on order issued by FEFSI and instigated by Director Ameer. FEFSI is returning a favour to Ameer because he was the only Director who had openly supported FEFSI during the wage issue. At this point, Producers' union went to Alex Pandian's shooting spot and tried to resolve this issue (Producer council's head SAC was absent in extending the support). The latest talk is that Director Ameer may get a Red Card from the council unless he stops these wide-spread disruptions.
Background
Here is the background of this Alex Pandian issue which started during Paruthiveeran almost 5 years ago.
- Ameer agreed to direct Paruthiveeran on a first copy basis for Rs. 3.5 Crores. Producer Gnanavel Raja (actor Surya and Karthi's home production house) signed the agreement with Ameer.
- Ameer overshoots the budget by 100% and spends 7 Crores and demanded Producer to dish out additional money so he can complete the movie. Producer decided to shell out more money so Karthi can get his debut movie released.
- The movie releases with some pending issues with Ameer as he claimed that the Producer still owed him Rs. 80 Lakhs.
- The movie becomes a major hit and the Producer recovers the money and decides to ignore Ameer's settlement plea. Ameer lodged a complaint at High Court requesting Studio Green to settle Rs. 80 Lakhs and this case has been going on for almost 4 years now.
- Fast forward to 2012, Studio Green decides to release the movie in Telugu without paying any royalty money to Ameer. As per the rule book, the writer and director Ameer should have received at least 1/3rd from selling the dubbing rights to release in Telugu.
- Ameer launches an attack through his friends at FEFSI by obstructing the shooting of Alex Pandian so he can put the pressure on Studio Green to pay the Rs. 80 Lakh balance + royalty for dubbing rights
- This issue has been going on for the last few days and this is expected to get resolved with a possible 'Red card' issued to Ameer for his questionable approach to resolving personal issues. If this Red Card is issued, this will inhibit producers and actors working with Ameer in the future. As a result of all these troubles, poor Jayam Ravi's Adhibaghavan is stalled and his future pipeline is starting to dry out as he waits for Ameer's movie to complete before he can move on to the next.
With individuals taking laws in their own hand and the level of unprofessionalism rampant in the Tamil movie industry, one would doubt whether it is even justified to call it an "Industry".
