Raja Natwarlal Movie Review

Ameet Bhuvan

Raja natwarlal has to be the singularly most sleep inducing experience in a movie theatre this year. That despite some heavy duty songs and skin show by the import from our neighbors’. For a con movie, this one has some of the laziest writing one could witness in cinema.

Raja is a small time crook cheating people and spending all that he earns on his girl friend cum bar dancer Ziya. Life is all good and peaches till he decides to go big and robs a huge hand. His partner in crime is bumped off by the actual owner of the money they stole and Raja sets off on a revenge seeking mission. He seeks the help of Yogi, the guru of all conmen to help him in this mission.

It is after about two years of experimentation on screen that Emraan returns to what he is most known for, kissing and playing the grey shaded hero with aplomb. While he delivers his best, he is cruelly let down by an insipid script and disinterested direction. Kunal Deshmukh makes Raja almost as if he was making yet another sequel to Jannat- nothing differentiates this one from his first outing with Emraan. To make matters worse, the film’s story just refuses to even pretend to be engaging. From the start till the finish, it is one long yawn inducing affair.

There is just not enough meat in the con jobs in the film. The people Raja cons are so dumb one wishes they get conned every single living day. Then there is the unbelievably lack luster love track between Raja and Ziya, which only seems to have been thrown in to make way for songs. Songs that are hummable in isolation, but in the film just end up being fillers every time the writers did not know what to do next.

Which is sad because Emraan is sincere and deliver. For fans that alone is the good thing in the film. Emraan is joined by Pakistani actress Humaima. She has absolutely no expressions, wooden and plastic all she does is wear skimpy clothes and dance around. Paresh Rawal lights up the screen when around but he too is saddled by a sad character that never really lets him tap his full potential.

We have seen what Emraan can do in his last few films like Shannghai, if given a proper role and script. While Raja Natwarlal intends to be a proper masala fare , it does not provide Emraan with that kind of a role that could help him push his boundaries further. Give us a Ghanchakkar anyday over this one Emraan. You deserve better. So do your fans.

Verdict : Plain Boring
