Vijay's Jana Nayagan Finally Clears Censor Hurdle, Locks July 23 Release

PUBLISHED DATE | 15/Jul/2026

Vijay's much-awaited final film, Jana Nayagan, has finally cleared its long, rocky path through the censor board and secured a new release date. The action drama was originally set to hit screens for Pongal, but that plan fell apart when the makers couldn't get their certificate from the CBFC in time.

The trouble began back in December when KVN Productions first submitted the film, only for the final certificate to remain stuck despite the team reportedly agreeing to a few trims and tweaks. What followed was a drawn-out legal tussle, stretching all the way to the original release date itself. The Madras High Court eventually ordered the CBFC to clear the film with a U/A 16+ rating, but the board pushed back with an appeal, stalling things further. Even a Supreme Court attempt by KVN didn't help move things along.

As the delays dragged on, frustration boiled over among fans, industry folks, and film personalities alike — the backlash grew loud enough that even Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi weighed in support of the release.

Things took a darker turn when a chunk of the film — and eventually the whole thing — leaked online in April, triggering outrage across the fanbase. The Cyber Crime Wing in Tamil Nadu booked 21 people over the leak, and six of the accused were later refused bail by the Madras High Court. By the time the dust settled, reports suggested nearly 1.2 crore people had already streamed the leaked film before it was even certified.

Hopes for a turnaround grew once Vijay took charge as Chief Minister in May, and that optimism has now paid off — the film has cleared censorship and is set for a July release, closing out a painfully long wait for everyone involved.

Helmed by H Vinoth, the film brings together a heavyweight cast: Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani. It marks producer Venkat K Narayana's KVN Productions' first Tamil venture. The film has also drawn comparisons online to the 2023 Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari, seen by many as a partial remake — though the makers haven't confirmed this themselves.

Jana Nayagan releases in theatres on July 23.
