As of September 29, 2025 (Monday), 41 people have been confirmed dead in the tragic Karur stampede that took place during actor politician Vijay's rally in the city of Tamil Nadu. Among those who lost their lives during the September 27 Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) political rally are 18 women, 13 men, 5 girls, and 5 boys, including toddlers, baby, and children.

The Tamil Nadu government under Chief Minister MK Stalin has set up a one-woman commission, headed by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan, to investigate the causes of the Karur stampede. “The TN government wants to avoid any harsh step that looks hasty. Let the committee or the judiciary provide the first push”a senior official has anonymously stated in the media.

The TVK rally at Karur on Saturday, was part of Vijay's Tamil Nadu state tour that kicked off on September 13, 2025. Per TVK’s schedule, Vijay was slated to speak at Karur between 3 PM - 10 PM, but arrived in the city only at 7 PM. Since the Vijay, and TVK supporters had gathered for the rally from 9 AM, several ended up collapsing due to dehydration and exhaustion.

A stampede broke out upon Vijay's arrival, and the TVK head's speech was interrupted with an unmanageable crowd, and ambulances ferrying them to local hospitals. Vijay is even caught on camera throwing water bottles into the crowd, and asking the crowd to make way for the ambulances. Karur hospitals confirm that 32 of the 41 were brought dead.

Since the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF to be given to the deceased's next of kin, and Rs. 50,000 to the injured. Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin has announced Rs. 10 lakh to the families of those who died in the stampede, and Rs. 1 lakh for the injured. TVK and Vijay have announced Rs. 20 lakh for the families of the deceased, and Rs. 2 lakh to those injured and undergoing treatment.

While Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the Karur hospital overnight on September 27 to console the survivors and families personally, Vijay has been receiving harsh criticism for "fleeing" to Chennai. The star actor turned politician has also come under the scanner for being one of the last people to put out a statement, regarding the tragedy and loss of lives. #ArrestVijay has been trending on social media since the Karur tragedy.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) chief engineer in Karur, Rajalakshmi revealed that TVK's Karur district west secretary requested a power cut in the Veluchamy area, during Vijay's speech on September 27, 2025. While TNEB rejected this request, a signed letter with the TVK letter head reads,

"The leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Thalapathy Vijay will be coming to Karur for a public meeting on 27.09.2025 at Veluchamipuram, Erode Road, Karur after 12 am. Arrangements have been made for the above event to be held with the permission of the relevant police department. Since Veluchamipuram is a crowded area and a large crowd of people will come, I humbly request you to turn off the electricity only for the specified time when the leader is speaking, considering the safety of the public."

TVK meanwhile has alleged political conspiracy as reason behind the stampede, and has moved Madras High Court for a Suo moto cognizance.
