Top 10 Tamil Directors of 2013
The top 10 directors have been selected from the list of creators who had the guts to explore artistic boundaries while carefully balancing commercial factors. The weightage is a bit more tilted towards the creative/artistic side in this ranking.
1. The director who tops our ranking is Suseenthiran, who delivered two emotionally engaging films in 2013. In both Pandianadu and Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer, Suseenthiran ensured the viewers were vested in the outcome of the lead characters. Both movies were commercially profitable.
2. Director Bala had the guts to take a periodic film on the grim topic of slavery at a tea plantation. The director deserves credit for narrating it truthfully without making commercial compromises.
3. Mysskin delivers an edge-of-the-seat thriller without any known faces. Even though the applause from critics and fans did not translate to box office returns, it received enough adulation to get Mysskin focus on his roots.
4. Kamal Haasan produced, directed and acted this magnum opus released after a lot of struggle while risking bankruptcy. Kamal's screenplay had some slow moments. But, Vishwaroopam should be recognized for realistically making a Tamil movie dealing with a globally sensitive topic of terrorism.
5. Nalan Kumarasamy is the most buzzing debut director of 2013. His Soodhu Kavvum got both the masses as well as critics excited. Nalan once again proved that one could make a 'big' movie with a shoe-string budget.
Congratulations to directors Ram, RS Prasanna, Ahmed, Atlee and Gokul for entertaining and inspiring us in 2013.
