Draupathi is a Tamil movie which caused a furore 5 years ago, right before the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic eclipsed everything going on in the world. Director Mohan G became a notorious name through this Draupathi movie, which starred actor Richard Rishi in the lead.
Now a sequel titled Draupathi: II has been announced, and it will see the return of Richard Rishi as the lead actor, and Mohan G as the film's writer, director. Draupathi 2's announcement poster reveals that the film is a period drama, based on the 'untold blood saga of 14th century Hoysalas'.
Draupathi 2's genre is way different from the first movie Draupathi, which controversially took a dig at the oppressed caste in Tamil Nadu, and blamed them for the fake marriage racquet in the state.
Draupathi 2 on the other hand seems to be based on the 'Battle of Kannanur' (1342-43), which saw the Madurai sultanate i.e. the Tamils, stop the Hoysalas i.e. the Kannadigas from conquering Tamil Nadu at that time. The retreat of the Hoysalas led to the capture and execution of Kannada King Veera Ballala III, and the seizure of the Hoysala treasury by the Madurai Sultan, Ghiyas-ud-din Muhammad Damghani.
