Parasakthi Title Issue: Sivaji film's original producers claim no permission was obtained!

PUBLISHED DATE | 01/Feb/2025

Parasakthi (1952) is a Tamil film based on an eponymous play by Pavalar Balasundaram, and is a production venture of P. A. Perumal Mudaliar founded National Pictures. The Parasakthi posters from that era also reveal the inclusion of AVM Studios in the film's production, though National Pictures to date remain the original producers of the movie.

Recently, the Dawn Pictures produced Sivakarthikeyan film revealed its title as Parasakthi, titled after this vintage Sivaji movie. However given the cult status the 1952 Parasakthi enjoys, Dawn Pictures producer Aakash Baskran released a lengthy statement that read,

"In the century-long history of Tamil cinema, "Parasakthi" stands out as a title of significant impact and uniqueness, continuing a subject of discussion even today. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to AVM Productions and Mr. Balasubramanian for granting us this esteemed title and for their encouragement.

We also express our sincere thanks to the honourable family of Muthamizh Arignar Dr Kalaignar (screenplay writer of Parasakthi film), who graciously and joyfully permitted us to use this title, as well as to the family of Nadigar Thilagam, Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan, for their invaluable support.

With the legacy of this prestigious title supporting us, we assure everyone who stands with us that our creation will truly honour and uphold the faith placed in us.

Thank you

-AAKASH BASKARAN,  PRODUCER (Dawn Pictures)"

Notably, National Pictures was nowhere mentioned in this statement, and now R Karthikeyan, the grandson of Perumal Mudaliar, has revealed that Dawn Pictures did not obtain title permission from them. He has also added that AVM Productions was the regional distributor of the Sivaji starrer Parasakthi at the time of the film's release, and that National Pictures continues to be the producer of the movie.

"We have begun work on releasing a digitally restored version of Parasakthi, which is about to celebrate its 75th anniversary. At this juncture, we request that no one else use Parasakthi, for which we have the full rights, as their film's title,

The (Sivakarthikeyan) film's makers haven't reached out to us yet (until Friday afternoon). We haven't said that we would not give them the title. We just wanted to establish that National Pictures are the producers of Parasakthi as per the censor certificate. The makers might have thought that the area distributors (AVM Productions) were the producers, perhaps because we have been away from the film industry for years."R Karthikeyan to TOI
