Kadaisi Ulaga Por Review - Innovative but not Intriguing!

Ashwin Ram

Kadaisi Ulaga Por is a futuristic war drama starring Hiphop Tamizha, Anagha and Natty in the lead roles. The film is written, directed and produced by Hiphop Tamizha.

Premise:

Set in 2029, all the countries in the world are bent down and formed as one Nation named the Republic, except America and India. The Republic force enters India to capture and take control, what happens after this forms the remaining story.

Writing/ Direction:

An unique story world set in the future, promises to deliver a new experience. There are many interesting new-age ideas in the script, but the believability is lacking despite the technical finesse. It is probably because of the rushed narration, nothing is conveyed in a clear manner. A sensitive World War topic that should have been aimed to cater to a wider audience, sadly the execution feels as if the target is only the Gen Z crowd, hence the hurried pace. The pacing does not let the innovative plot-points evolve to become a good scene, so the emotional impact is an outright zero. Many vital situations are conveniently written and lethargically executed, thus there is absolutely no seriousness in the subject for us to involve and follow the flow. A no brainer with way too many logical loopholes. Romance portions consume very less time, yet one of the nice elements in the initial half, unfortunately the payoff is very flat for this particular aspect. The second half is comparatively better where there is a breathing space for the situations to stay composed. There are few smart masala stretches towards the end, but becomes repetitive and the climax falls flat.

Performances:

Hiphop Tamizha looks comfortable in his pure-heart role, however his characterization is weak and the hero material is never appealing. Natty on the other hand is a surprise package, neat performance with a dynamic character arc and definitely the best one in the film. Anagha and Nasser have their share of importance, but they don’t land that effectively. Many other supporting artists have been scattered with half-baked moments and it becomes a tough process to follow.

Technicalities:

Music isn’t impressive, lukewarm both in terms of songs and background score, the sound quality is also jarring and unclear. Visually rich, be it establishing the geography and camera angles for tight shots, good stuff all over. Great efforts by the art department as well, the sets look realistic and superlative output has been achieved by the visual effects team, the CG shots look intact. Sloppy editing and the treatment is like a marathon race, no settling time given for the story or the emotions to stay. Poor mixing, many dialogues and voice-overs are overlapped by the sound effects and score.

Bottomline

A large scale plot packed with some thought-provoking ideas, but they don’t come together well to form a convincing product. The rushed screenplay is the biggest issue, a flat first half followed by a passable latter.
