Grammys 2024: India's Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, Selva Ganesh, Rakesh Chaurasia win!

The 66th Annual edition of Grammys i.e. awards presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognize outstanding achievements in the music industry, took place in Los Angeles on February 4, 2024 from 8 PM EST [February 5, 2024 6: 30 AM IST]. American pop and global music sensation Taylor Swift created history, by becoming the first artist ever to win the biggest award of Grammys i.e. Album of the Year 4 times. She took home the gilded gramophone for her 2022 studio album Midnights

India for its part brought home Grammy laurels via the fusion band, Shakti. Shakthi which features renowned artists like John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, V Selvaganesh, and Ganesh Rajagopalan, won the Global Music Album for This Moment that released in June, 2023.

AR Rahman, a two time Grammy winner himself and a regular at these shows, posted a selfie with Zakir Hussain, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist V Selvaganesh from the Crypto.com arena where the event was held.


 

Originally a 1970s band, Shakti reformed in 2020, and released their fourth album i.e. This Moment which was their first work as Shakti in 46 years. The album is currently gearing up for a world tour under the name Shakti50.

Indian tabla maestro Zakir Hussain also won two more Grammys - one for best global music performance for Pashto and the other for best contemporary instrumental album - As We Speak alongside American banjo player Bela Fleck, American bassist Edgar Meyer, and Indian flute player Rakesh Chaurasia.
