Jigarthanda DoubleX written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, and starring Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah in the lead is all set to release in theaters tomorrow i.e. November 10, 2023. During the promotional leg leading upto the grand Diwali release of Jigarthanda DoubleX, the makers unveiled several interesting details that went behind-the-scenes (BTS).

Jigarthanda DoubleX writer, director, producer Karthik Subbaraj said that the idea of a sequel to his 2014 acclaimed hit Jigarthanda came to him almost 8 years ago. During Iraivi (2016 movie starring SJ Suryah in the lead), when Karthik Subbaraj was just about 2 films old, he had approached Raghava Lawrence with the same. However the filmmaker gave up on his original sequel idea, as he felt it 'wasn't good enough'.

Karthik Subbaraj also revealed that he chose Raghava Lawrence for the shady gangster character of Jigarthanda 2 because of a similar grey-portayal by the actor in Paarthen Rasithen (2000). Karthik Subbaraj in 2023 is a bankable name in the Tamil film industry with several hits under his belt. This made the director pull in a budget of Rs. 100 Cr. for Jigarthanda DoubleX as opposed to Rs. 20 Cr. he got for Jigarthanda. 

An homage to western troupe films, Jigarthanda DoubleX is set in 1975 Madurai. Karthik's style of films involve more live locations than sets, and the attention to detail is also a talking point of it. The director has revealed that they recreated 70s Madurai with huge sets in Madurai itself. How a Clint Eastwood fan cum gangster from this region (Pandyan played by Raghava Lawrence), ends up realizing the power of art by starting a war with Satyajit Ray's assistant Ray Daasan (SJ Suryah), is what forms Jigarthanda DoubleX's story.
