Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam to contest independently this TN urban body elections!

PUBLISHED DATE | 08/Feb/2022

Several political outfits in Tamil Nadu submitted their nomination papers on February 4, 2022 for contesting in the urban body elections that will be held on February 19, 2022. Actor Vijay's political outfit Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (TVMI) is one of them and it has been announced that they will not be allying with or supporting any other other party this time. TVMI's official statement dated February 7 also says that this decision is in accordance with actor Vijay's order.

In October last year, as many as 169 members of TVMI contested in the rural local body elections, with 115 getting elected. This performance was pegged significant because even senior parties like Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) and Seeman's Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) failed to make any headway in these polls.

It remains to be seen how TVMI performs in the upcoming elections where the ruling DMK-led front seems to have an upper hand. The urban body election is taking place after a gap of 10 years in the state and the polls will be held in a single phase. Candidates will be contesting to be elected in 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, 490 town panchayats and 649 other urban local bodies.
